Zen is totally different architecture. Max overclock on Ryzen is roughly 4 gig +/- no matter what ambient cooling solution you use.
Ryzen is much faster than any Vishera.
Both are easy to OC.

What about the 2700x can it go higher than 4Ghz oc?

Again, depends on the chip but most can do 4.1 without a problem. 4.2-4.3 is possible with the right chip.

IMO, overclocking is never pointless. Free speed is free speed. :)

But if the turbo goes higher than the oc can make the chip go doesn't that make an oc pointless?

Your system is pretty much the same as mine look at my system specs.

When you overclock your mileage will vary. Just remember it's Chip Lottery too so the thing is if you manage to get 5.0 across all 8 cores you got a decent chip. If you have a really good chip if you can do 5.1 to 5.3 gigahertz on air.

No.
Turbo only turbos that speed on 1 or 2 cores .
Your OC is set to run on all cores all the time.
If you only run single threaded apps, then Turbo might be ok for you.
Depends on what you plan on doing with your rig.

Won't be much longer if Asus approves my requests I asked them for that's why I also asked about the ryzen 7 2700x for the oc cause if Asus approves my requests I'm going to return my fx 8350 and sabertooth 990fx r3.0 for the ryzen 7 2700x. I went through 6 asus 990fx motherboards that got the ff error with the cpu led popping up and wouldn't post at all with a fx 9590. 4 mobo's were crosshair v formula-z's and 1 was a sabertooth 990fx r2.0 and the other one is in my system specs so I thought I'd try the fx 8350 on the sabertooth 990fx r3.0 and see if I get it to work but won't know that till tomorrow as that's when my fx 8350 comes.

Does the oc apply to even hyperthreading cores like the ryzen 7 2700x has?

Did you even try to update the bios, by the way it is possible to get bad batches of motherboards. Also it is always important to clear cmos before initial power on. And how are you sure you weren't sent the same exact board back to you?

I will say right now, just run your system stock, get comfortable with it at stock, then read your motherboard manual, then learn baby step overclocking.

I did update bios and clear bios but still nothing worked and I even exhausted asus's troubleshooting resources but still nothing worked and no I did not get the same board sent back to me. All 4 crosshair v formula-z's were different serial numbered and asus only sent me one sabertooth board which was the r2.0 and I bought the sabertooth r3.0 and I bought three of the four crosshair v formula-z's all from different places and asus sent me one of the crosshair v formula-z's. But all boards had different serial numbers. I even tried four different sets of memory cause at first I thought it was the dram light coming on but turns out it was the cpu light the whole time.

I'll get to know the sabertooth r3 only if the fx 8350 solves my problem but I give the chances of it not working at 80-90%

I hope the new chip does the trick or the next thing on my list would be a faulty PSU since that many boards showing as "Bad" is certainly not normal in any sense.

But 3 different psu all different wattage and I still get the same error across 6 different serial numbered boards. I don't think it's the psu.

As a former owner and overclocker of multiple FX setups, let me tell you, just do it, you'll be happier.

I don't know what your use case is but Zen will beat FX @ gazzilion GHz anytime.

@ newraze - You didn't mention before that you had swapped the PSU out and tried others - Looked back over your posts and there was no mention of it being done.

Have to say if you can go Ryzen that would be the thing to shoot for, more relevant and would be good for sometime to come. Admittedly FX is good for MHz but it's like a dragster doing a nice-n-smoky burnout, looks cool but he ain't going nowhere fast compared to what he could be doing.

If for some reason you can't that's understandable.

Well like I said asus has to approve one of my requests for me to be able to go zen but I hope asus does approve it but the chances of that happening are pretty low.

Well I've just about tried everything and after I get the fx 8350 today I'll have tried everything if the fx 8350 doesn't work

So the fx 8350 solved my problem and that means none of the crosshair v formula-z's or none of the sabertooth boards supported the fx 9590 fully in the first place aka no asus high end board supported the fx 9590 ever

I think I'll upgrade to ryzen 2.0 slowly over the next few months

Tell that to my CHV-Z and 9590, they get along just fine.
I don't know what's going on in your instance but the CHV-Z's and Sabo's are just about the only ones that DO support the 9xxx series while being able to handle it.

Now - Doing an upgrade to Ryzen is a good move, once you do you'll be set for sometime to come.

Well 4 chv-z's and 2 sabo's came up with the same exact error with the 9590 no matter what I tried to do to fix it

6 bad boards is highly unlikely.
9590 runs just fine on my 1st revision Sabertooth. Benches at 5.4-5.5 no problem.

Asus high end boards are the only boards that I would recommend for any 8 core FX, including the 9xxx series. They are the only boards with a stout enough power delivery system.

Sounds like you had a bad chip at that point.

The common denominator - If the chip came up bad in every board you tried it in it's obviously the chip since the symptom(s) followed it from board to board.
However don't toss it if you haven't already, I'd think it should still be under warranty - I'd contact AMD and see what they could do about it.

Unless you didn't buy it new you should have a receipt or something to show to verify you were the original owner, that would help your case for an RMA or refund.

If they decide to just bump you up to a Ryzen I'd jump all over that and be done with it.

Free Ryzen upgrade won't happen. Too big a price difference. If anything they will offer a cash or store credit settlement.
With 6 recorded previous RMA's, they are just going to send you on your way.........................to another manufacturer. :D
You already cost them too much.
