As it says. I'm going from sli GTX285s to a single GTX480, then sli GTX480s. Yeah I know, old and pointless, but very cheap, and why I'm doing it right now. What's a good start for a ref 480? 800/1600?

It's all about temps. The GPU can take a decent amount of voltage and the reference PCB is fairly stout in that department. Again it's all about temps, if the cooler is reference then 800 is usually the limit-ish.

Try to crank the fan up and I would not let it sustain temps over 90C. Might be noisy but stock cooling on these was just not up to the job at 800+MHz. The problem is these cards really fly with voltage bumps and a good OC. Mine has been at 962MHz @1.168 Volts for over 2 years with 0 problems, but it is liquid cooled. On air 800 is a good goal with minor voltage bump from afterburner preferably. Stone Giant DX11 and Heaven 3.0 simulate the best temps under gaming conditions from my exp. Furmark and such are overkill I would stay away from those on air as the generate unnecessary heat you wont see during gaming.

w1z got 770 on his without voltage bumps.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_480_Fermi/35.html

The stock coolers are not that great in SLi without the fans buzzing at 100% I wouldn't expect much out of them maybe 800 core if you are lucky. I know due to temps I had to notch down my top GTX 470 since it sits around 80C gaming and I am not comfortable letting it go any higher...

+1 GF100 cards seem to go full grizzly on the coolers I think the lack of Ocs on the web is more because of the lack of cooling then any real limit to the cards.

This is all my upper GPU can handle in games without getting silly hot.

Mind you these are kicked up from stock volts and stock clocks of 608 core /837 memory via the EVGA superclock BIOS. Which is something you need to look into for yours if you ever get good coolers. (in case you are curious one card has a reference cooler and the other a Zalman VF3000F I am waiting on a pair of DD-GTX470 waterblocks to fix the temp issue)

480/470s are still today very stout card. a little extra clock definitely helps them especially with modern software engines limiting the frame buffer from getting overrun. So 1200-1500MB VRAM is still good.

Thanks guys, yeah, if I just have the single 480, and with all 8 of my case fans going 100%, and the 480s fan at 100% (yes, I'm deef!) 800/1600 should be a starter, if not 800/1700 or higher. I figure I'm stuck with this thing for now, so I might as well make it rock!

They are good cards. Look into a bios with some more room for voltage however.

Using afterburner it should take you up to 1.13 I think. Afterburner Extreme will go much higher without a bios change. For 800MHz regular afterburner should do just fine. Temps are key to success.

Also being "stuck" with a 480 is not a bad thing, if you can get 800+ out of it its still a very very good DX11 card that would smoke your previous SLI config especially in real life smoothness, as in no microstutter. Play with older drivers too some do better than current ones.

880 in sli on reference coolers was the best I could get. Note that mine are in the worst config possible, sitting right on top of each other. If you are able to leave a slot empty in between them, they'll do better.

still though fans at 100% and side panel off is necessary for that speed. So perfect for benching, not ideal for most gaming, well quiet gaming isn't ideal.

800 core for 24/7 on reference with stock fan settings should be fine. I was actually running at 850 for a while but found my sli fps was through the roof already so I figured I was stressing my cards for nothing and set it back to stock.

cards run hot as it is so watching temps won't be as helpful in determining whats too far and what's not. Artifacts are a more reliable test for that.

all in all good luck and let us know how it goes.

edit: my best

882core 2103 memory in sli. I think all of you with 470's will be surprised what a 480 can do on reference.

Arg, birthday is sucking so far... I should of received the 480 today, instead it hasn't even been shipped yet. And they seem to be showing it out of stock. Wheee, fun!
and yeah, I think when I sli them, I'll just stay at stock clocks, it'll still slaughter my sli 285s....

I am more worried what it can do continuously on the stock cooler. I just don't letting the card get that hot, but after this thread I have been slowly jacking my 470's up again while I wait for waterblocks.

Figured out how to drop card temps a smidgeon

I'll just stay at stock clocks, it'll still slaughter my sli 285s....

Having experience with both types of setups, the GTX480 will be smoother than the SLI config.

Efficiency of fermi is much better, on gpu cache is much better. Better memory controller and more VRAM. So even with just one card I have seen rigs run so much smoother, I played around alot before the hydro copper came in. GTX 275 SLI and GTX 280 SLI got smoked in real life smoothness.

Fermi drivers helped too the series did very well in my opinion. If you compare GTX 480 to the GTX 570, I would take a 480 any day. The 480's are tough as nails, they might run hot but I have never been seen one go down and pushed some high volt through 3 different ones.

Card shipped yesterday, I'll get it Monday morning. Really wanted to play with this thing! It will be nice to finally have dx11. Hoping this thing will be a good clocker, think my case has the airflow to keep it cool. Kind of frustrating to get ideas as most of the reviews and even forum posts about it are from like 2010. With still maturing drivers (any improvement for 5xx series works for the 4xx series too!), might be time for someone to do a re-visit on it's performance. Should be fun!

Just FYI I would run 301.42 the newer drivers have reported issues with GTX4X0 series cards.

Thanks, I'll check into that, but really hoping I can use the newest drivers. Also, if I run 2 monitors off it, will it still downclock? Or do I need to stick in a 260 or something to run the 2nd monitor?
Edit: I might go check out these superclock bioses out... but I'm already scared about temps!
Edit2: looks like the 480s scale really well with ocs.... should be fun!

Mine kicks to 405core/850memory on the card with 2 monitors. So it should go into low power 3D

Toms hardware did a re-review of the GTX480 not tooooo long ago with new drivers and how they matured. very good read that card gained very well over time avg like 11% with what was then new drivers i think the 295.xx series. Also Fermi handles AA really well if your a Anti-aliasing freak like me. Google that article if you feel like while you wait it might help you tune the card and get the expectations inline.

I thought so too, couldn't pass it up for that price. Should be able to get a 2nd one in a month for $199can, and hopefully less. Unless I find a used one for a dam good deal! Now I'm trying to figure out bioses. I see this site hosts an EVGA bios that's clocked a bit higher, and allows upto 1.15v. Would that be a good place to start? I also found a SC version on mvktech but it has no info on clocks or voltage. They also have FW and DF versions... confusing!
Edit: okay now know FW is the hydro copper, don't think I'll mess with that bios....
