I am trying to boot from my USB flash drive. I followed the instructions step for step that are in the article on this website. I downloaded the HP program and the USB Image zip file. I ran the HP flash program and pointed it to the folder where I unzipped the USB Image files to. I then copied all the files over to the USB memory stick as instructed. When I restart my computer and press F12 to go to the boot menu I have 3 options: SATA hard drive, CD-ROM drive, or USB Device. So I choose USB device and when it reads the USB memory stick all I get is the error "Non-system disk, replace and hit any key" Its like the USB memory is missing some system files or it doesnt have the master boot record or something. Somebody please HELP!!! I want to flash the bios in a new video card and I have to boot to DOS and I dont have a floppy drive and I have Win XP so a USB boot is probably the best option I have.

you told the hp tool to "use system files from ..." and you copied the files from the zip to the usb stick after formatting?
Yes, I checked the box and showed it the folder where I unzipped the USB Image file. And then it started formatting the USB memory. Then after it completed I copied the rest of the files from the zip file over to the memory stick. Then tried to boot computer to the USB device. After restarting I press F12 to enter the boot menu and select USB Device from the list and it reads the USB memory cause the green light flashes but I get the Non-system disk error message.

I have tried this once before it didnt work for me either. The only thing i have ever heard that will boot off usb that works is linux. Most of the boot off usb device is designed for a usb floppy and that floppy normally has to be the exact same type they use for that model. Thats what i have been told about my alienware laptop. There is something i will try shortly though and thats to go to my desktop make a boot floppy and copy the exact material to my usb and try it that way.
I am not saying give up cause i want to know how to do this also.

This doesn't work on my computer downstairs. I think it's just because the hardware (the motherboard) doesn't recognise the device, and needs software drivers to be able to use it.
It works on my new rig, but it never did on the crappy old dell.

can you select usb floppy / usb hdd in the bios without using the f12 menu ?

If you're trying to boot windows on the pendrive it will not work afaik. I think XP reinitializes the usb drivers upon boot.. BSOD'ing..
Wizzard, yes I can select USB Device from inside the Bios. It gave the same result. I eventually got it to work. I had to not copy the other files over after running the HP program. For some reason when I copy the remaining files over it doesnt work but if I let the HP program format it and check it only has the 3 necessary files: command.com, io.sys, and msdos.sys then restart the comp it boots to the usb drive and comes up at a dos prompt.
Dippyskoodlez, no I'm not interested in booting to the usb device to run windows, i need to be able to boot to DOS to run a bios update program on a video card and I dont have a floppy drive.
