Help with VGA cooler for radeon 6950 CFx

Alright one more quesiton:

What mobo should I get to allow the use of 2x6950 cards with accelero xtreme plus ii?
Do you guys know any mobo that will fit these items and match with my cpu and Case ???

Your current board will allow it. The PCI-E spacing is sufficient since your have two slots in between your PCI-E x8 slots.

Actually it would be the other way round... the back of the bottom card would be touching the fans of the top card.

and yes. looking at your board. it will happen. there will be a small 0.2-0.4mm gap between the two cards. I had this problem with 2 5850s with Twin Turbo Pro's installed. Even though i had a fan on the side of my case blowing air directly over the cooler. temps for the top card which was blocked still hit 80'c where as the bottom card never went over 35'c. the fans are so small on the coolers. they dont really push a lot of air when they are so close together and it gets worse when the hot air from the bottom card is sucked in to cool the top card.

the next step i was going to take to try and fix the problem was to get the really thin Scythe Typhoon fans and replace the fans that come with the twin turbo Pro with 2 thin 120mm fans.

They use the same fans on the Xtreme series of coolers as they do on the Twin Turbo Pro's

Luckily for me. i came into quite a substantial chunk of money before i was due to take the step with modding the top cooler. and just sold everything off and bought a new rig that doesnt suffer from the same problem

I'm pretty sure the space would be just about insufficient because yes I would be able to fit both cards with the accellero xtreme plus ii on, but I'm barely have a centimeter seperating both cards meaning I'd get a lot of heat on the top card... wouldn't I ?????

I will be like 5*C hotter on the top card than the bottom card at the extreme end of gaming loaded temperatures.

The way the fans shroud is designed, it can pull air even if there is a flat surface they sit on.

Yeah, he's kinda wrong**. My motherboard has the same spacing and I use two Accellero Xtremes on my 6950's. Heat won't be an issue and for a tip.. if you have a side panel fan, use it as an exhaust.

Since at the moment there is no response to whether one card will get too hot due to possible lack of space, there is a cooler which will resolve the space issue.

I would say it will most definitely be more expensive than the AC VGA cooler but I do not know for how much.

See if the Thermalright Spitfire is compatible with your cards.
Have one of these on the top and the AC EXtreme II on the bottom.

It won't. I get about a 2c difference in a case that is much more cramped than his.

Actually I found out you're right, read the post above yours. I did have these cards on my gigabyte board and it actually does have the same spacing as your board. I did not have a heat issue at all and I have no idea why you did. Perhaps having your side fan as an intake?

I was wrong on the spacing of the PCI-E slots however I'm not wrong that the cards will still fit on his board with those coolers on it. Like I said, I have no idea why you had the heat issues since I have run my cards in the same slot configuration on my Gigabyte board. So, yeah I made an error on the slot configs. but I'm not wrong.

well guys.... This thread is about helping me about installing new VGA coolers on my cards. I'm really thankful for all your input, but there's no need to start fighting about who's right and who's wrong because in the end, I'm the one who's gonna have to do a decision...

Now, my question to ERocker is: "Where does the hot air get exhausted if the Acccellero xtreme plus ii sucks air in with it's 3 fans" ??? Now that might sound like a noob question, but I'd rather make sure than make some wrong assumption...

the fans blow the air onto the PCB and then it flows outward into the case, hence why erocker advised a side door exhaust fan

The fans blow down on the card so it exhausts out of the sides. This is why I recommend using a side fan for exhaust. If you don't have a side fan, it's fine, just don't use a side fan as an intake as it will mess with the airflow.

yeah, I just modded my phantom case so that I have a side window... so no more side fan config possib for the moment (except for the 2 small 120mm fans further down the side panel...)

How should I set my 2 top 200mm fans (the ones on top of the case)

Because my current fan config goes like this:

1x140mm fan at the front sucking air in
2x120mm on the left side panel sucking in
2x120mm fan in a push pull config blowing the hot air through and out of the radiator (coolit alc eco)
2x200mm fan on top (one as exhaust and the other as intake...)

That is not enough spacing. I am using the Asus P8P67 mobo with similiar layout so I am guessing the tempt of the top card will be much hotter than the bottom.
