Helping a friend choose best type of graphics card combination

My friend bought a new system yesterday to play Bad company 2.
His system specifications are :
Graphics card: Palit GTS250
Motherboard: Intel P55 Us3L
ram: 4gb gddr3 (Patriot)
cpu: i5 - 750 2.66ghz
harddisk seagate 320GB

He had the graphics card from his earlier computer and I told him not to get a new one and wait for a bit. He wants physx support and his motherboard supports crossfirex. I thought he can buy hd5850 ATI card when they are cheaper. Is there any way to use crossfire technology with gts250? Or should he replace the graphics card now rather than wait for another year. What do you think?

BTW he can play the game with 1920x1080 with medium details.

BC2 doesn't even support Hardware Physx. If he's okay with those settings I'd just leave it be.

He has to have two similar ATI cards for CrossFire (ie: two 5850's, or one 5850 and one 5870). He can run one 5850 and the GTS250 for Physx (or even two ATI cards in CrossFire plus the GTS), but it's probably not worth much except for 3DM benches.

You can't use Crossfire with nvidia, because it's proprietary to ATI. Same as SLI is proprietary to nvidia.

In general, I don't use either solution, because they have issues with profiles and scaling.

That GTS 250 is quite a good card and should run fine. In time, component prices always come down, so your friend could get the 5850 now if he wants, or wait for a more powerful card at that price point later on. It's not hard and fast.

personally, I'd sell the GTS250 and buy a 5850. I'm currently running a 5870 and it fully maxes out BF2:BC @ 1920*1200 resolution and my field of view expanded to 200' with FPS anywhere between 60-70fps
