Do yourself a favor and get a factory 2nd Steelcase Gesture for $300 - $400. Best high end office chair (or gaming chair) IMO at an absolute bargain of a price.

I don't think the "Gesture" is something for me. According to reviews it has a rather thin seat pad, which is an absolute no-go for me.
Also the 4-D arm rests is something that would probably drive me nuts, lol.

And yes, you can save a lot if you buy these premium office chairs 2nd hand. Drawback is you can't personalize a 2nd hand chair.

Steelcase uses a hybrid cushion mesh for their seat but what makes their seat special is that the seat pan itself is flexible. If you try other high end mesh or padded seats the padding or mesh will flex but the seat pan remains rigid. The Steelcase seats themselves flex to conform to your bod and not just the padding. One of the biggest complaints for the Aeron is it's hard seat pan and than complaint extends to many other high end products as well. Going to a chair with a thick cushion would be a mistake as those chair always loose their comfort value after a few years as the cushion ages.

Any customization options you could get on a new chair you can get from a B-Stock or 2nd hand model. It's 100% not worth is spending 3 - 4 times the money when you can get an open box product with the same customization.

Definetely this, or something similar. Your back will appreciate gaming for a lot longer (both per session and life span), seriously screw gpu, monitor, whatever hw upgrade, a good chair will be much more enjoyable than a couple dozen extra fps or some new reflections you'll barely notice outside photo mode.

I’m just glad a bigger company like Logitech is finally using an ergonomic design and not the “racing” style we’ve had for years. I hope other companies follow suit.

Sadly I doubt it, bad cheap racing chairs have better margins (probably even against a 1000$ chair lol) and are able to sell much higher volumes by also being cheap to buy.

Fortune 500 companies never pay full retail for task chairs. If you see a truck deliver a herd of Herman Miller Aerons to an office building, they weren't $1000. They're probably part of a larger contract that includes cubicle partitions, cabinets, drawers, other office furniture, etc.

With companies downsizing their physical offices, a lot of these chairs can be found on the used market. Hell, a lot of people in Silicon Valley bought used Aerons during the original dotcom bust in the early 2000s. You won't find them on eBay since it's not practical to ship them. You'd find them on auction sites, Craigslist, etc.

I've had this for going on 15 years. I upgraded the wheels to nice rollerblade ones off amazon. Mesh hasn't bottomed out yet (weight has fluctuated between 75kg and 100kg in that time). Great in summer (in Australia!) and no aches or pains to speak of. If you're in Aus I can highly recommend, they're offering a free upgrade to rollerblade wheels and 5 year warranty too. To be fair, I don't think that people looking for the best value are the target of Herman Miller, those are designer furniture, those guys made stuff that are part of the history of design, and studied in design school. That collaboration is the equivalent of Nike collaborating with Dior, it's not meant for the average customer of Nike .
(But to the credit of Herman miller they didn't built their reputation on looks alone)

That's my point. They don't require end user assembly. They come from the factory that way.

When you see these chairs delivered to an office building, they are dropped off from a truck without retail boxes. There might be a plastic bag to prevent major scratches but they don't come in retail boxes.

Shipping might be built into their retail price (like many items at those online retailers). Like I said, it wasn't always like this. Amazon most certainly was not selling Aerons in 1998.

I have a 10 year old herman miller aeron, and a 2 year old newer version of that chair as well. Both are as good as when they were purchased.

Your chair will not wear anywhere near as well over 10+ years, plus you will be warmer and sweat more in a chair like that. Cushions will compress over time, needing replacing, and you will have compression points in a chair like that. It may be fine for you with the amount of time you sit in it, but good mesh chairs are rated as 24 hour chairs - ie you could sit in them 24 hours straight and not get problems with pressure points. They are also better for your skin, as your body gets air circulation all around it, reducing sweat and letting your skin breathe better, especially your back.

Still - enjoy your chair. From a comfort and health point of view I will continue to enjoy mine.

On the chairs in the article - it's a shame it is not a mesh seatpad - the back is important, but the seatpad won't be as good as a mesh option. I'm guessing cost was a factor there.

Yes indeed, you should buy a better bed first. After all, one averages 8 hours per day in it, 56 hours a week.

For the typical office worker, a quality task chair is a close second purchase from a ergonomic standpoint since you are spending 40+ hours per week in it. If you work from home and game several hours a day, you might actually be spending more time in your chair than your bed.

The people who don't get the point of a decent task chair are usually below the age of 40. Trust me, once you celebrate your 40th birthday, you will start to appreciate the value of a good chair.
