High idle temps?

Hi guys, I have a quick question for you. I just built a new rig last night and while I was looking around the bios I noticed the cpu idle temp was hovering between 39-41c (while my ambient was about 22c). I haven't gotten to do a load test yet but that looks really high to me, what do you think?

the build:

i7 6700k - not overclocked
Cooler Master gemeni II M4 cpu cooler
MSI B150I gaming pro ac 1151 board
corsair vengeance LPX 16gb 2133
fractal design nano s
samsung ssd
corsair CX550M power supply (fan facing downward out of the case)

I'm waiting on the release of the GTX 1080 so I don't even have a video card in there generating extra heat yet. I'm not sure if this is normal for this processor/cooler of if I've done something wrong, or maybe a setting somewhere in the bios causing this?

Any suggestions are much appreciated!

Temps can be normal depending on fan speed in the case/cpu. Are you 100% sure the CPU cooler is seated correctly? Did you use factory thermal paste or apply your own? If your own, how much did you put on?

Yeah that seems hot, my skylake i5 6500 runs just 1~2 degrees above ambient temp.
I have it cooled with coolermaster 212 evo and used kryonaut thermal grizzly thermal paste.

I have very good temps, your CPU should run at around the same temps.
On load just over 40 degrees.

Check if you have the cooler mounted properly.
Is the fan spininng (or slow)?

I used the included CM paste, the fan is definitely spinning and I have the cooler on hand tight. Maybe I should remove it and re-seat it?

I think the CPU runs at high load(Does not run idle) in the bios or does on my older p67a chipset ,Cpu always seems to run at high heat compared to the O/S temps

Once you resume windows what are the idle temp?

Temps in windows will probably be lower. Bios will always put a mild load on the cpu, although it used to be even more on older boards.
In any case, check your bios fan profile, it's probably set too conservative. Or else create a new one.

When you say hand tight, do you mean you tightened with your fingers only?
That will give insufficient pressure from the cooler on the CPU, that said, do not over tighten with tools either.

For the 40th time. Idle temps mean nothing. Bench test it and check the load temps

Every time I remove a cooler and replace it. I start up real temp and then run Prime 95 for a few seconds to make sure I got it on correct and its not misaligned

OCCT also works

I Skylake CPU shouldn't idle at 40 degrees with a good aftermarket cooler.

what is ur room temperature ?

My temps around 40~45*c indle, but my room temperate around 30~35*c, so it's pretty fine for me...

Air cooling doesn't use magic to cool down ur PC, PC should be +5~15*c over room temperature.

Well within the normal range

Well, my Skylake CPU just hovers a few degrees above ambient.

14nm Skylake CPU's should run cooler than previous gen CPU's, even in idle.

My Haswell CPU gaming laptop runs 35~40 idle.

@ASOT what is your idle CPU temp?

I don't see the ambient temp in these graphs.

Guess I'm lucky then with my cool running i5 6500 :D

Sorry =]

6500 is 3.3

i5 6500 is 3.6 GHz turbo.
Mine runs about 3.7 GHz turbo max because my XMP memory profile OC'd my processor a bit.

Hand tight with tools lol

And thanks for the replies everybody. I had to leave for a business trip since posting this, but I did update the bios right before I left and took a look at the cooler. Since I was using a mini itx board I didn't have much room for my fat fingers to move around lol. I remember having some trouble with the "spring post" mounting screws. There are 3 options for board types in the mounting brackets, the posts slide back and forth to choose the right one. The 1151 is the middle option and those stupid posts don't like to stay in the right one. With a closer inspection of those posts before I had to leave, it looks like 2 of them may not be aligned properly. I'll reseat the cooler when I get home sunday night and report back.
