High pitch fan noise on my 2020 HP Omen 17... any idea how to solve this?

Hi there,

first of all: I'm very happy with my new HP Omen 17-cb1770ng (it's not getting too hot, not thermal throttling, performance is great and basically all is fine), BUT the GPU fan started to make a high pitch noise after a week of usage, which is unfortunately very annoying to hear in a silent room.

It is definitely not coil whining as it increases and decreases perfectly in sync with the GPU fan speed. On reddit there a numerous Omen users who report the idential issue (see threads 1, 2, 3...)

I already opened the Omen up to clean out any dust, but since this machine is barely a month old there wasn't any. Ofc I did all driver updates and BIOS as well and only use the machine on a flat surface or passive laptop cooling pad. I also tried undervolting the Omen with Omen Gaming Hub to -0.0100V (which still runs perfectly fine and even 8°C colder), but since the CPU fan on the left side of the chassis isn't the issue, undervolting doesn't really help.

As the Geforce 2070 Super stays very 'cold' (max ~70°C, even in Cyberpunk 2077 with high settings) I wanted to try to limit the GPU fan to some lower value with SpeedFan as the fan whining only starts after a certain RPM, but SpeedFan doesn't recognise the model.

If nothing helps I guess I'll need to send the Omen in, but this seems to be an issue with many current Laptop models: I had a DELL 1770 before and it had the exact same high pitch fan noise issue, same as the DELL 15 (2020 model as well) by my girlfriend (and now the 2020 Omen 17 too). They all seem to use the same chassis fans which develop this high pitch "whimpering" after a while, so not sure if a fan replancement would even help..

Do you know of any other way to get rid of this nerve wrecking feeping (e.g. a tool to limit the GPU fan to a lower value)?

Have you considered the thought it is GPU VRM noise.

Limit FPS and reduce power limit by half... if the noise scales with that, pretty much you are screwed. No ways to fix that,

The reason theyre so loud is because theyre running at super high speed due to heat build-up. I tell everyone that goes with any high powered laptop to do 2 things. First is change your thermal paste to either

Noctua NT-H2 or

Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut.

I DO NOT recommend using liquid metal/ conductonaut on laptops or game consoles. Second thing is to invest in a cooling mat like this. https://www.amazon.com/Pccooler-Coo...621113&sprefix=laptop+cooling+,aps,185&sr=8-5

As said, I'm sure it is not coil whining / VRM noise, as it also occurs when I just increase the fan speed to max fans in Omen Gaming hub, without the GPU doing anything.

Also I do use several cooling pads, also ones with fans, but heat is not the problem as the machine stays pretty cool even under heavy load. Hence a repaste is not necessary at this point imo.

I did some digging for you. it seems it has been an ongoing issue for the Omen laptops since 2016. not really sure what can be done about it other than maybe try undervolting like a few others. But most that ive found had to contact HP and HP refunded them. One guys was so bad that even set to silent and at idle you could hear it from across the room. Hp gave him a refund.

Thanks, yeah I guess that's my last resort. Hoped for a fix tho, but it's a difficult issue. Will see what HP support says.
