A 6 Core workstation for 389 dollars? Oooooh the shenanigans that would be in store.
What would you guys do with this? Scavenge or mod?

buy it, buy a case I can actually rack mount with it (looking at you rosewill) then I would DEV on it, because testing in production is for scrubs.

Dell R710s are something. worked on a lot of them while working at microsoft. Dell servers were far more pleasant to work with than HPs.

I would want an SSD in it as standard, not a HDD and 16GB RAM would have been better too. The Quadro card is pretty low end and will perform poorly in 3D graphics, eg gaming so you'd want to upgrade it straight away if you want to game. It's basically an entry level card with Quadro branding and BIOS. The price premium associated with the brand doesn't seem to be present with this model, though.

If there was an option to have an ordinary consumer graphics card in there along with the SSD & RAM that would have made a better combination for an enthusiast or home PC. The SSD especially would speed up the PC noticeably.

Not saying that this PC is not worth buying, but that I think those are important issues to think about.

It's the first generation E5 6 core. (Sandy bridge xeon). A similar 8 core / 16 thread CPU is being sold on Ebay for 60 USD now.

Having said that, it is a good deal because you get the whole thing. Finding a mobo for Xeon SB can be costy.

Newegg doesn't even try to post any other info about the motherboard on their site - shame on them. It is a server motherboard, how many CPU slots there is, how many memory slots there is...

Hows the performance on the xeon? 3.2GHz seems pretty midrange these days, 6 core or not.

All about usage on my end. I run multiple VMs and run alot of balancing. More cores is far better than anything high clocked. Even the high core AMD chips at like 4ghz dont hold a candle to the clock cycle efficiency not to mention they dont have the more advanced virtual passthrough.

That said though, in the VM world RAM and HDD space (I/O throughput) are the most important. You would be surprised at how many VMs you can run while auto balancing resources, as long as you have a shit ton of ram. Go ask the DB admins or SQL guys they will tell you. 8 core 768GB RAM.

One of my machines for example has about 9 server VMs for perspective with a 4c/8T Xeon in it. I reserve 1 core for the host OS and let the VMs eat the other 7. She runs hard some times but avg usuage is around 5-15% CPU but I easily eat upwards of 20-25gb of ram. and I dont run DB servers.

I expect Newegg to publish information that will help me with the purchase and that information is provided by HP in PDF file. HP probably didn't supply Newegg with this information but they should find it and publish it themselves because in the end Newegg isn't a site like Amazon to which you only turn to after you know which model you are buying, it is a site that offers you more information about computers since it is computer-centric.

Take a look at this: https://www.cyberport.de/pc-und-zubehoer/server-workstations/server/liste.html
It has information about how many RAM slots and CPU sockets the servers have.

That's not for the same HP server! Do they show how many slots for the HP Z420? No! It just says 32GB.

Newegg sells 100,000s of items. They can't slice open boxes then crack the cases open and count the slots. They would lose money on the "open box" item and it would be a huge waste of manpower - costs that would be passed onto consumers.

What you are asking for would surely be nice but is just plain unrealistic. If you are interested in an HP server, visit the horse's mouth - HP. Not a re-seller.

But is 6 cores worth it? For bragging rights maybe. Not sure for gaming unless you plan on doing a bunch of other intensive tasks in background while gaming.

I am going to leave this here:
32 GB, 1866 MHz, DDR3 PC3-12800, ECC
insgesamt 8 Steckplätze stehen zur Verfügung
davon sind noch 0 Steckplätze frei
maximal installierbarer Arbeitsspeicher: 64 GB
8 slots and all are populated, it supports up to 64 GB of memory. You also get other info that Newegg doesn't have.

That's great. I just don't think Newegg, Wal-Mart, Amazon, Best Buy, Tiger Direct should be expected to conduct extensive research on every thing they sell. It would be nice, but not something I expect.
