home based vpn

ive been searching for days but cant find anything solid
im trying to setup a vpn server at home without having to pay a monthly fee for a vpn service
looking for advice/help setting up a vpn so i can download and upload without my isp emailing me about what im doing online
any help would be greatly appreciated

I don't think you understand how VPNs function. You can't do what you are asking.

i transfew hundreds of gig of files between my work computer and my home computer and im sick of getting emails and letters from my isp about copywritted content when there isnt any and my finances doesnt allow for paying for a vpn service

Or paying for copyrighted content either. ISPs don't send copyright letters unless your downloading/uploading copyrighted stuff.

thats the problem it isnt copywritted materials yet i still get harrassed even though ive argued for hours over the phone

As pointed out, that's not how a VPN works.
However, have a look at OpenVPN, you could run that in a device in your home network, connect to it using their client in your PC at work, if you want an encrypted connection from work.
The other option is to set up an FTP server at home that uses encryption and FTP the files from work.

Some questions.

1) You transfer files between your work PC and home PC. Are they in the same place and connected via a router in your home? Or home pc is in well... home and work PC is in office?

2) You transfer files over network or via external hard disk or pendrive?

i transfer files via bittorrent seems to me to be the easiest way and with fiber at home it just works well,the work pc is at work on a different connection but using the same isp ,i guess they my isp just doesnt like torrents i dunno

I'm with TheLostSwede on this one, try an FTP instead of bittorrent. Maybe your ISP just sees a lot of P2P traffic and assumes you're doing something bad.

Consider using FTPS or SFTP over SSH (encrypted) and enable FXP (so you can resume files in case the connection is interrupted). FXP also allows you to transfer files between servers, without having to download it to your local system, i.e. you can initiate the transfer for a third system between to FXP enabled FTP servers.

Maybe just go for a free one ? Windscribe seems pretty great as you can see here : https://the-bestvpn.com/windscribe-review-test/ I've never tested it but I've heard good things about it. I think it's not worth struggling setting up your own VPN...

I've been using ExpressVPN for 2 years, it's a great VPN, but super expensive... I might try to change for a cheaper one when my subscription ends

That's not going to help him, as he's trying to connect between his home and office computers to transfer data between the two.
Windscribe is fine if you need to access websites that are geo blocked etc.

All he needs is an encrypted connection between two specific machines, so OpenVPN it is. While technically Windscribe could do it (encrypt all traffic), it is very slow and transfering "hundreds of gig of files" is out of question. I do have Windscribe Pro account and best i can get is 1-2MB/s for P2P transfers, regardles of server i connect to. It does offer some nice functions such as ad blocking and their app is really good, but because of downloads speed i would not recommend it to anyone. Especially if you're planing on huge file transfers every day.

Seriously, 1-2MB/s ? Wow, that's super bad !! I have like 15MB/s with ExpressVPN, upload and download.

For P2P traffic - yes. Other downloads are a bit faster, but rarely would go over 10Mb/s.

Since you have the same ISP in home and work try HFS (https://www.rejetto.com/hfs/). When me and my friend were in the same ISP back home we'd share files over it.

I have had good success with setting up OpenVPN on my home network. I did it for proof of concept and now have no real reason to use it lol. Seems like this would fit your use case though.

Concur with the rest of the posts, you can find more info under the VPN settings section of this page: https://cooltechzone.com/ so, basically, here are the pros and cons... pros: has high efficiency, open source, encrypted, compatible with most devices. Meanwhile, the only con is that you'll need a separate program, not a deal-breaker. You can compare it with the rest of the protocols too. Good luck!

Tap interface connection between work and home, with an open-wrt router, works well for sharing stuff between the two. you can do the same with a low powered 'server' PC running open VPN.
It's easy to set up, you just have to make sure that the ports are forwarded/open and they might not be from your office.

If it's just file sharing you are after, then there are a few open-source cloud options out there (gratis). I use Resilio (which is closed), but I know of other projects that are meant to work very well.

I have a TAP connection from my office to home. Running alongside resilio, it gives me access to everything I keep on my home server and allows me to keep backups of my work (non-sensitive stuff).

As others have said, sFTP (there's another too, but forgot the name) will also work well for this and the port is more likely to be open/forwarded in your office. I use sFTP for my phone backup, rather than rely on having my photos in the cloud.

OpenVPN should do the trick. Remember to forward the ports used so the two computers are able to establish a connection trough the routers. If you install VPNGate at home or at work, you can select share/server option.
VPNgate also provides free VPN but finding a fast server can be a challenge.
