I've been hearing about this. I'm glad there will be a Homeworld 3. Homeworld 1 and 2 were such great games in their day. Especially Homeworld 2 imo. The remastered collection is very nicely done and certainly playable today.

You can pick up the Homeworld Remastered 1 and 2 plus Deserts of Kharak for $9.55 (89% off) on Steam right now or just the remastered Homeworld 1 and 2 for $5.24 (85% off) on Steam.

Wow, what the hell ? I was just thinking of Homeworld ... like one hour ago, while sitting on my couch.

Even more, I was thinking... so bad this franchise wasn't continued, would be really nice to have a Homeworld 3.

It happened about the time this video was posted.

Am I a cyborg that can subconsciously access the Internetz ?

Homeworld 3 was crying out to all of those. I was thinking about this game some weeks ago, then I saw the gearbox was going to make a Homeworld announcement at PAX today.

As a longtime Homeworld and Cataclysm fanboy, who was extremely disappointed by Homeworld 2, I can't decide how I feel about this.

On the one hand, yay another Homeworld game that is actually going to be set in space! And it's made by some of the same people who made the original game.
On the other hand, Deserts of Kharak was hardly compelling.

So as usual I'll hope for the best and not have any expectations - hence I won't be disappointed, ut I might be pleasantly surprised.

Yeah, HW2 didn't have completely OP salvage corvette...

Neither did Cataclysm tho.

For me, HW2 fell down in these areas compared to the original:
  • story: need I even mention?
  • flexibility/strategy: Homeworld had a very well-balanced and varied mix of units that meant there were no hard counters for any particular ship, which allowed for a great degree of freedom and personal choice when it came to deciding how to defend or attack. HW2 dumbed down the ship classes to rock-paper-scissors which essentially dictated your fleet composition.
  • difficulty: for the above reason, HW2 was a far more difficult game because if you didn't have the right type of units to counter the enemy's, you would be shredded. This was true of both single- and multi-player, which could make the game pretty un-fun at times.
  • graphics: Homeworld was a gorgeous game that pushed the boundaries of computer hardware at the time. Its sequel was gorgeous, but didn't push any boundaries.

Well, I must admit that the vanilla HW2 game is pretty bland...

However some dude (and his team) made an absolutely awesome mod for it, called Homeworld Complex (which is now available on Steam Workshop for the Remaster).
The mod introduced some very nice concepts, like espionage and counterespionage, hyperspace inhibiting to actually secure areas instead of suddenly finding yourself surrounded by enemy fleet, stationary defenses to be dropped in resourcing operations or other relevant strategic points, command levels (for a growing game instead of just overwhelming your opponent with no chance of recovery), slow infinite resources via "mining" for those really long games... and most importantly, upgrades to mothership/flagship to actually survive in the destroyer+ era when damage is just insane.

It really pushed HW2 to a next level !

I hope HW3 will 'steal' some ideas from that mod (or even hire the modder... maybe it already happened?)

In the HW mission with the hyperspace inhibitor, I would have 20-30 salvage corvettes taking so many ion frigates. Some times the game mecahinics wouldnt let me hyperspace to the next mission, I would have over 50 of those ion frigates. My fav to steal was the multi beam frigates. I would have at least 6-8 of those.

Yeah, that was abused so much ...
After those missions everything else that was thrown at me by the game was popped single shot from the multi-beam frigs.

I usually reloaded the game if a single multi-beam would die ;)
Well, until last mission of course, where there's just too much happening and impossible to keep them alive. But at that point it didn't matter anymore.
