How does this sound?

How about an option within VR controllers of a rotational object that can create enough centripetal force to give resistance when moving the controllers in 3D space? This could help to give the sensation of pressing against a real world object with your hand, like stroking a dog.

This sounds interesting! I haven't heard of anyone working on a controller like this, but Sony's PS5 controller sounds interesting with its adaptive triggers. I never got to try "The Void" at Disney world but it sounded amazing. It didn't have the controllers you are talking about, but it did build all of the set and when you reached for a panel you could feel it. It even had air that would blow on you to simulate fans or wind. Sadly, it has closed due to Covid.

Nevermind full body tracked. I forget exactly how long ago it was(maybe a couple of years), but I remember reading about a company( UK or Japan) that was making life-like robots for that purpose and the article stated something along the lines of "the head(of the robot) alone will cost $10k", which was a joke of sorts, meaning the head portion of the robot alone will probably be the most expensive. Whoever resorts to using one of those things better hope there aren't any "screws" or commands in the wrong place! :nutkick:

Implementing existing features in console/PC gamepads would be a more useful pathway to better VR controllers because game developers can implement this is software the same (or at least similar) way.

I would love to see the PS5 DualShock's haptic feedback and adaptive triggers make it into consumer grade VR hardware. The key is software. The Steam Input API now supports these new DualShock features, it's now up to game developers to include the functionality in their titles.

Yeah, Sony has already confirmed it would have the ps5 adaptive triggers on it's controllers. I can't wait to see what Valve is working on as an Index successor as well. If anyone is going to use these SteamVR features it's going to be Valve.

I just hope Valve does better with durability because I've heard bad things about the Knuckles controllers with respect to durability,.......
Yeah if the index controllers were more durable then I would have bought a pair for my Vive and I would not have bought a Rift S. Then at some point I would have bought the HMD as well. I was really looking forward to being able to buy the controllers and then later upgrading my Vive to the index hmd for $499. Oh course I'm kind of glade I ended up with a Rift S just to get away from lighthouse tracking.

Now don't get me wrong I loved the lighthouse tracking when it worked but I hated the whining sound they made and the fact I had to buy power adapters with a rocker switch to turn them on and off. My light houses never would go to sleep. I really hope Valve is working on inside out tracking as well.

The inclusion of adaptive triggers and haptic feedback is a no-brainer in the PS5 VR controllers since it's the same manufacturer: Sony.

What I am hoping for is more widespread adoption by other VR hardware manufacturers, particularly in entry level models priced for consumers. I am not interested in shelling out $1500-2000 for a VR HMD.

But this is good to help encourage game developers to support these features in software in both non-VR and VR modes.

I have really high hopes for the new PSVR 2 to be a real next gen VR HMD. I don't expect it to be crazy expensive either, but more than the PSVR's starting MSRP. I'm not interested in buying anything over $299 or around that ballpark. I can't wait to see all of the devs actually use the PSVR 2 hardware and it's features like adaptive triggers and haptic feedback unlike how no devs for PCVR are using Valve's index controllers to their full potential.

I agree I want more consumer level affordable VR HMD's like the Quest 2 from other big players. I hope Sony prices the PSVR 2 to sell high volumes like the Quest 2, but who knows?

This is the first thing I thought of when I read the title. What a pleasant surprise.

That would really help with giving not just feed back, but directional feedback when the players real world hands goes 'out of bounds' via collision detection from the virtual hands, as well as useful feedback from touching or bumping virtual world objects. Could even give useful feedback when a player hits an object where they can have a sense of where it's been knocked over to, or a rough feeling/sense of it's trajectory, in a usefully similar parallel to how you can close your eyes and knock something over and get a sense of what direction.
