how can I control the amount of bandwidth Steam uses?

I want to download TF2 thru steam (it's free TF2 weekend) but my dad plays BF2 all day every day and I really don't need him bitching at me cause his game lags. Normally it sucks up all the bandwidth at 580KB/s or so. How can I force it to download slower?

you could always set in your router to give the internet priority to your dad's rig over yours.. otherwise you'd need some special software. setting the steam process to a lower priority in task manager might also help..

another possibility would be to get the main tf2 files from a certain bay out there, and then use steam to update/rebuild the files, rather then to download it, as it will take a while, took me about an hour or so with a steady 1.5 mbps..
