1. their current system is failing.
2, they have the urge to upgrade
3. A new system gives them some functionality they desire .

Let me try.
Because there's a different degree of supply and demand for memory.
Because motherboards themselves are a platform, can't do much by themselves and there are a lot of options/designs available. Memory enables you to run software...and the more the merrier.
It can cost up to 400€ for the performance difference between the bog-standard, JEDEC-sanctioned and universally supported 2133MHz DDR4 and 3600MHz+, of which are harder to sample.
Because in the XXI century, pseudo-exclusivity has a price.

I didn't need to upgrade but I did because I could... Because I like techy stuff.

Because there are like three companies in the entire world that make RAM chips, they do so for almost every electronic device in the world and they concentrate most of the know-how and the patents, so there aren't many chances of a fourth competitor surfacing any time soon. It's easy for them to reach an agreement on minimum prices.

The motherboard market, on the other hand, has at least six or seven widely known companies, with others that are not really well known, but make many MBs for OEM systems. There is a lot more competition.

Some of us tolerate this because there isn't much we can do, besides not buying, and sometimes we need to build a new PC. Others just have more than enough money to spend on whatever they want, even prohibitively expensive computer parts, and/or don't really care how much it takes to get the latest and greatest (that doesn't mean they won't try to find a lower price first, however).

Well, on a total of a build its not a huge price increase for example. Take a 1500 EUR build - 150 EUR on RAM is just 10% of it, and lets say it doubled in price today, that's 5% cost increase on the entire build.

I bought a lot of extra DDR-4 memory when it was still cheap. I put it on the shelf for the future, so I have plenty of it.
I notice that GPU prices are beginning to come down too. I hope that it sticks,............

Well, if Nvidia or AMD announced new GPUs, maybe the current ones will reach lower prices. This whole situation has become tiresome because of the miners making prices go too high, Nvidia not releasing new GPUs for more than a year and half and Vega just remaining out of reach for most people...

I'm guessing part of the reason is memory is in higher demand as more and more mobiles/smart things/ssds are sold with higher and higher memory capacities. Takes time to build more production facilities/pay it off.

Yep, the current pricing on DRAM gets under my skin too. And it's worse here due to overtaxing (VAT on EU side if it's imported from Poland, plus ukrainian sales tax) and ofcourse overpricing.

Just a couple of months ago I've got a batch of LGA1151 boards for repair and had to spend around $60 at a local store on a stupid 4GB stick of DDR4, so I can check whether my repair was successful or not. I did not even consider buying a dual- or quad-channel kit cause honestly, fuck that - I need a new soldering station.

Now I'm building a Ryzen rig for my cousin's birthday and a mediocre 16GB kit will drain my pocket nearly by the same amount of money as a Ryzen 5 1600 and a B350 motherboard combined!
To put it into perspective, that's more than I paid for my i3-6100 with B150 board and the exact same 16GB of DDR4 just 2 years ago!

Ugh, I know. Similar issues here in Argentina. A 16 GB 3000 MHz DDR4 stick is worth around the same as a Ryzen 2600 (AR$ 6000 or USD 290) For a bit over a half of that price, you will only find 8 GB 2133 MHz sticks.

I can relate - The current build I did last month only cost as much as it did due to the insane RAM prices, woudn't have happened at all if I wasn't in it as cheap as I was for the rest and even with that I had to limit the amount of RAM I did buy.
7700K - Free (Won it)
Maximus IX Hero - $85 and had to fix a few bent pins.
8GB's DDR4 RAM - $137

My case is nothing short of fortuitous (Did I spell that right? ) but worked out in the end.
They know you can't get it anywhere else - It's a cooperative-monopoly, plain and simple and will be that way until more competition comes along or we just stop buying..... And they know that ain't happening anytime soon.

I figured that I would eventually use it and got it at good prices.
I have two 64GB kits on the shelf and two 32GB kits as well. The two 64GB kits are going to go into a Threadripper build once the new TR-CPUs drop.

So I've basically been immune to these gouge-happy prices on RAM this year. I feel for those who have to pony up the big bucks to build these days.
