How come AM4 motherboards have no DP, but Ryzen 2200G supports Freesync?

I want to buy a AMD Ryzen 2200g and a cheap B350 mobo but I can only find DVI and HDMI built in to the mobo, but the zen/vega APU supports freesync, and I thought freesync was largely only working on DP? Am I missing something? I need a budget build for older games... :/

I know there are monitors out there since 2016 that support freesync over HDMI.

thanks, i wasn't sure if it was standard now or not, its so hard to tell which models do and don't.

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824011160

that is the monitor i have, but i mean it doesn't tell me yes or no... lol i will just have to order and roll the dice. i do have a hdmi to displayport cable, i read that has enabled freesync for some users in the past... ugh...

I have LG 22MP68VQ FreeSync monitor. Though my GPU is Nvidia (GTX 560 Ti). AMD supports FreeSync over HDMI for sometime now.

Thank you for the clarification, for some reason I had just assumed Freeesync was DP only 99% of the time. It has been years since I have looked into it though, I only remember reading about it when it was new, thanks for the update.

I've seen boards that support VGA, DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort, and even parallel port (). DisplayPort tends to be on the more expensive boards however.

Well I decided not to go through with it. I'll just catch up on my reading and netflix backlog until new gddr6 gpu's come out and are msrp price. /shrug i am in no rush

and if freesync is DP only, it is kinda silly their cheapest APU with vega would need that... so surely freesync works over HDMI now... :/

Yeah, I am slightly upset at Sony for not doing this to PS4... it really does make gaming more enjoyable. :/ But Xbox does not have the exclusive titles i want... sigh, it never ends eh mate?

I thought FreeSync and G-Sync on HDMI needed Variable Refresh Rate feature, available only on HDMI 2.1?

I was about to type, topic closed "thank you for your help everyone, I was just unaware that HDMI Freesync was a common thing now since I haven't looked this topic up in awhile" but now you just went and made me sad again :(

Awww, you're making me feel bad about that...

Anyway, it was an honest question, since I thought that feature was optional or didn't exist until HDMI 2.1...

I looked it up a little more, though, and the Acer GF246 should support FreeSync over HDMI, ranging from 47 to 75 Hz, according to this table by AMD.

Hope you're happy again ;)

It's not the HDMI version that matters, it's that the monitor has to support FreeSync over HDMI and very, very few do. Even those that claim to support FreeSync and have an HDMI port, you have to make *sure* that it supports FreeSync over HDMI (vast majority don't). So no, FreeSync over HDMI is not common.

HDMI 2.1 specification has support for variable refresh rates but that doesn't mean an HDMI 2.1 panel is capable of doing it.

Adaptive sync works a lot like HDCP: video card, cable, and display all have to okay it before it is available to any.

Freesync 2
FreeSync 2 requires HDR which is HDMI 2.0a spec or newer. HDMI 2.0b expanded the types of HDR supported.
