How do I get 7.1 sound from my old pc to my receiver?

I have an old computer I've hooked up to my Yamaha RX-V779 home theater receiver, but I only have stereo so far, and that just won't do. The receiver doesn't seem to have any input for 7.1 sound other than HDMI, and the GPU (gtx 9800+) seems to only supports s/pdif 2 channel uncompressed, although I haven't been able to figure out if the motherboard even has those connectors. The motherboard (MSI P6N SLI) has a 7.1 channel High Definition Azalia certified audio controller, 6 configurable jack ports, coaxial s/pdif so with the right cables and whatnot, this should work out, right? What are my best options?

The manual says it has coaxial SPDIF, so I'd use that, from the mobo audio.

It should still work with the HDCP functions, and if not, use something to go around that, I did.

Is 7.1 over coax spdif really fine? Do I need to do something to set up compression or is that plug and play? Would it be the same if I managed to find the spdif connectors to get sound through the hdmi? I haven't bothered looking too closely as it as I thought spdif would be sub-par.

Yeah good luck in getting true 7.1 surround sound unless you have audio tracks that are encoded that way if you don't what you'll get is sudo 7.1 surround produced by your amp

After saying that SPDIF should just pass any DD DTS etc etc through to the amp to decode if the sound card you're using doesn't support any form of Dolby surround which a lot of onboard audio solutions don't you're probably going to be better off going with HDMI from the GPU to the amp
