how do i know if my c2d is using both cores?

Sure, download Speedfan 4.32 (or newer) and Orthos Prime. Open Speedfan it will show a load bar for both cores. Set orthos to Small FFT's and Priority 9, you will see both bars at 100% in Speedfan.

Or Crtl-Alt-Del and see if there are 2 boxes for the CPU load in Windows Task Manager.
