How do I know when to defrag?

Why don't you do a fresh/clean Windows install? You'll see the difference.

I'm using the defraggler tool I downloaded form the same website I got CCleaner from.

It's much faster than the windows "disk defragmenter" and actually has a progress bar to show you how close it is to being done.

Roughly 100GB needed to be defragged. It's at 38% completion as this post was being typed.

I always defrag after i have installed a game or a big file. Keeps everything in order and doesnt take long.

The last time I need to defrag manually is when I was still using Windows XP, which mean 2-3 years ago.

I have my PC on most of the time, and when I don't use my PC, it's usually auto start to defrag.

^^ This. I have never run a manual defrag on Windows 7, tbh I don't think defrag even makes much difference these days unless the machine in question is a server of some sort. If you're running an older system then defrag may be useful but it also might be time to consider upgrading your hardware.

the automated defragger in vista/7 doesnt re-organise files no special placement for you

well its not wasted, but depending on the tool used, it may re-do some of the work.

My defragger is Diskeeper 2010 Pro at the moment (upped from 2009 pro). AFAIK it's the only one to prevent fragmentation (most of it, anyway), so not much to defrag, and even if there is, it does it automatically.

I really like the disc-style representation of your data in Ultimate Defrag - I'll give this program a go. Heck, use it on an SSD and enjoy the irony of seeing it represented like that.

it also supports folder/file name defragging (which is what i use) so that all the files in one folder are located physically near each other.

With the windows defragger, ones games files could be all over the drive - they're just in one piece each. using ultimate defrag set up properly, all my games files are next to each other - all bad company 2's files are right next to each other, all of L4D2's files are next to each other, and so on. no random seeking around to find files, its all right there close.

stop playing with it, it'll fall off/you'll get hairy palms/you'll go blind. and go do something else for an hour. remember that any files in use cant be defraggeg, so its best to leave it alone when defragging.

... thats a very outdated version. the new versions arent free. try running as admin at least.

Would you care to create a thread with step by step instructions? That sounds like the proper way to set things up and could be beneficial for alot of noobs and......well, me

I do it at least once a week.
That way it only takes like 15 minutes to 1 hour depending which defrag program I use.

I heard doing it that often is harmful (well, to the drive). I use Ultimate Defrag too. Keeping the good stuff to the front to the drive is worth doing it once a week.

doing a full defrag can be, defragging only fragmented files isnt. Her method isnt reading/writing every file on the drive, you see.
