How do I know who made my graphics card? 8800GT

Hi all, first time poster on this forum. Hoping somebody can help.

I have just started using my desktop PC again (Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe based system) which I have not used regularly in a while because I have always used my laptop, but now my laptop has decided to give up on me, I'm back on here.

Problem is, I can't remember who manufactures my graphics card! I have an Nvidia based 8800GT card but the only information I have is just that. There is no subvendor listed in GPU-Z.

The reason I ask is because my fan is seemingly always on 30% and my temperatures are reaching the 70s. I've been reading about this 'bug' with these cards online, and some have a BIOS update available, but I don't know who made my card. Any ideas?

Going strictly by bios revision. It's either a PNY or an XFX. Any pics of said card?

Thanks for the fast response.

I first thought "I'm sure I remember the box having the name of the manufacturer beginning with P" and now you've said PNY it rings a bell.

I have just looked on the PNY site and can't find any references to this card though, or any sort of 'discontinued products' section

What about pulling the side panel off the PC and having a look at the actual card? Usually MFGs put branding stickers on the HSF

Have you tried using something like MSI Afterburner to control the fan speeds? Might be less hassle than trying to find a compatible BIOS. Just set a fan profile you like and you'll be good.

As for the fan being stuck at 30%, I don't think that is actually a bug, but rather that is how the card is supposed to work. I seem to remember my 8000GT keep the fan at 30% by default as well until the temp hit 80°C, then the fan would begin to ramp up very quickly. I think nVidia did this to keep the cards quiet, because the single slot fans on these cards were really loud when the fan speed was increased. Temps in the 70s isn't going to hurt anything.

You could always pull the BIOS off the card with GPU-Z, then edit it yourself with NiBiTor. That little button with the chip and the green arrow coming off it is where you need to go to have GPU-Z copy the card's BIOS for you.

When I had my Rev.1 8800GT I just used MSI Afterburner and set up a custom fan profile for the card. Didn't need to mess with the firmware updates on it as I could set the idle speed higher and make the GPU much cooler overall.

Firstly, correct, it is a PNY. I noticed the manufacturer on the screen that appears before the system BIOS kicks in. But I can't find anything about the card online.

Newtekie1 - you're probably right. I notice there is a loud sound of a fan that whirs when the system is first started and then quietens down when the POST screen is up, but not sure if this is the graphics card or the CPU fan. I was just a bit concerned that the temperature seems to be consistently in the 60s/70s and didn't know if this was normal, and my first thought was "hang on, GPU-Z says my fan is at 30% all the time" and so I just thought maybe this could cause problems.

As long as your temperatures are under 90 you should be good :toast:

I'm pretty sure teh XFX cards, at least the ones I know have the word PINE somewhere when looking at the BIOS of the card.

You could run the card through furmark for an hour.
It will give you a good idea if the card is keeping as cool as it should under load.
