I don't put much store in what professional reviewers say anymore. I do read some reviews sometimes though. I never read player reviews on Steam or Metacritic. Metacritic is the worst source of player reviews that I have ever run across. People pass out zeros on games for any reason possible. If Half Life 3 were ever released there would be thousands of people on Metacritic rating it as a 0 just for the hell of it.

Mostly I pay attention to what people that I have come to know over the years in forums like this one have to say about a game in question. That's a big part of the value of being active in a community for me. I get to know the people who have been around a while, play a good bit of games and get a feel for their likes and dislikes and take that into consideration with what they say about a game. I generally watch a few youtube videos to get an idea of gameplay and visuals etc.

I keep a list of games throughout the year that I definitely want and a list of games that I might like to play one day if time permits. At the end of the year I check Metacritic for a list of games released that year to double check if I missed games for my lists and somehow I usually do.

tbh I never go by reviews.
I look at game trailers, screenshots, watch a couple minutes of gameplay on youtube and most importantly see people's opinions.usually it's as simple as seeing an intriguing title/cover and going to my favorite gaming site to see if the game gets mostly 8s/9s or 4s/5s.I bought some games that got 4-5/10 ratings from users.but that's uncommon and it's usually cause I know I'm gonna like it despite others didn't.
E.g. nier automata I'm currently playing only got 6/10 user rating, with lots of people rating it 2-4 cause of technical issues and how badly it plays on kb+m,which I fully attribute to the fact that people just don't know how to make sacrifices anymore.everything has to be perfect or else it's crap.nier indeed plays badly on kb+m,but I'm still enjoying the hell of this game and using a nerfed control system only makes me understand the machanics better :p

Spot on, this. Having gamed quite a bit it becomes easy to identify reviewers as pretty casual gamers, bar some exceptions. If you go on that alone you'll be getting a pretty narrow view on gaming. The actual gamers themselves though, can be categorized quite well and if you can identify that in the reviews they write you can get a pretty solid idea of what's what. More so than a tech/game site's review does. That is why things like Steam reviews but also Metacritic has value, but only if you spend some time reading several entries. On Metacritic its also interesting to see the major gaps between userbase and official reviews in what's written and scored. But you also need a review bombing/bullshit filter applied on that, so you have to have some background knowledge about the game's release and sentiment around that. For example, Stellaris has had some less fantastic updates in its time, and it'd be easy to go on that and think its a horrible game, when in fact its a fantastic 4X (and you can just roll back to earlier versions anyway).

There's simply a range of games for every person, you need to find what qualities you prefer in games and select based on that. Its different for everyone and it changes over time. Today I might like a meaningless grind, tomorrow I might want some brainless BR, doesn't make either game good or bad.

There is no game that offers everything in one package, simple as that :)

there's an option of doing an extensive research on your own or you may just ask @rtwjunkie instead.

imo it's most important to play what you want and approach bad opinios carefully.
I absolutely loved arkham knight despite it's one the most frequently bashed games of the last few years.same for andromeda, not as good as previous from the series, but nevertheless 100 hrs of great entertainment for me.watch dogs and watch dogs 2 got mediocre reviews but they're among my favorite series,I like them more than far cry and ac.

seems to me being a douchebag that leaves complaints and bad reviews everywhere should be registered as prefession now and get their own trade union.talking about people who bash every possible game that comes out but play a thousand hours of fallout 4 themselves

My feelings exactly.
Some days I'm simply not in the mood for anything too taxing, so a race around Monza or any Forza related game will do just fine. On other days I really want to get stuck in to some stealth and/or puzzles, and if it's a rainy Sunday, that could go on all day.
Thank goodness we're all different.

that's cause some games are meant to be taken slowly and one thing at a time cause they provide the player with new experiences at every step, some are meant to be taken in other fashion - for more repetitive gaming sessions that rely mostly on enterianinging gameplay mechanics.

I watch trailers, read reviews sometimes or listen to other people in general what they like.

For example I liked playing Far Cry 5 but the New Dawn I started it never returned because it bored me to be honest. I am currently excited for The Sinking City, Wolfenstein Youngblood and the re-release of Cathrine already pre-ordered it at GameStop.

I plan to get new dawn as a starter for rage, and get my share of this genre this year.imo fc5 is a pointless buy.it's good but there's better ways you can get that experience by buying new dawn on its own and then spend the rest on a game from some other studio.

I read Steam reviews, and Angry Joe is straight to the point, besides being very entertaining.

LOL, I appreciate the vote of confidence, but there are any number of people that play a wider variety than I and much more qualified to add their opinion on games, yourself included. :) I am always willing to share my opinion on something I have played, though.

I decide, uultimately on what to play much like you do, with not following the trend. Many times I enjoy a game many others are bashing. I do read Steam reviews, but I also look for the actual people that really play alot of games and seem to understand the intricacies (much like @Vayra86 wrote above), but even then it is only for an overall feel and what to look for. Usually I decide within minutes if I want a game or not.

if not sequel and it appeals to me (mostly looking at gameplay) then check store reviews for general feeling/areas of complaint. if I can live with the negatives, add to wishlist

Sometimes paying attention to what a member that has been around gaming for a long time and has a lot of experience can also cause you to pick up a game that is considered junk by most people but might be fun. When Duke Nukem Forever released it was universally shit on by everyone. I just checked Metacritic for people that care about Metacritic and it has an aggregate score of 54 for the PC version and a 5.8 from the Users Scores.

When that game was released everyone that I listen to was saying the game was a gigantic steaming turd but a few years ago that member that I spoke of here said that it wasn't as bad as people were saying so I added it to my list and picked it up for $2.50 on a Steam Sale. I had fun with the game. I'm not saying it was a great game or very good but it was fun for me. At the end of the day having fun with games is what keeps me in gaming.

If I find a game that look interesting for me, I look arround to find other peoples opinion and give it a try. If I like it i will play it again, if not then I will never play it again.

I read up on Wikipedia looking into the plot line and game play. Wikipedia usually has a paragraph or two about the reviews and/or reception of the game. I always take with a grain of salt, but it helps me narrow down my choices. My preference is first person shooters and Wikipedia has lists of games within genres, making it very easy to sort what you like by date or name. In example, here is part of what you get in most cases (specifically for the game Wolfenstein: The New Order):

In regards to buying games, I already have a pretty good sense of what I like and I don't like, so depending on the game I go from just buying without any research to watching some trailers/gameplay videos. If I'm still unsure I'll watch an in-depth video review or two, not those 5 min ign/gamespot style. It has worked out well for me.

As far as discovering games go most of it is through gaming sites or youtube, though I have found the odd gem through Steam here and there as well.

Something that always makes me curious about a game is if it gets compared to anything I've already played. This may seem like a no-brainer, but the thing is that I rarely find a game I REALLY like anyway, so if a new one is supposed to be similar to an old favorite of mine, I will look it up.

Youtube gameplay videos usually gives me enough info, more than a review does in words and pictures.

The older I get, the more I seem to appreciate unpredictability in games, I mean just look at my avatar...:D

Guitar Hero was the last unique game I've played.
So basically I just see how stupid the new take is on whatever and if it looks worth the amount of my life on.
I enjoy Call of duty WWII I don't enjoy Call of duty BlOps 4.
I also look forward to MK11 (new game engine for the series) but at no more than $40.. Usually when XL version comes out

The style of game that I play is currently very very slim, so not much choices:

Top-View fantasy ARPG (aka, Grim Dawn, Diablo 3, Path of Exile, Victor Vran, Van Helsing)

I already have these games and basically only play Grim Dawn today, especially because a new expansion was just released two weeks ago.
When I'll be bored of it, I'll switch to one or the other ones... plenty to keep me busy until the next Top-View fantasy ARPG comes up :)

It's more like what I won't play.

a) MMOs with an average player base under 25
b) Any single player came that requires me to "log in"
c) Any game that permits "pogosticking" as a target evasion tactic.
d) Any game that utilizes a console like gaming controller

After 26 years of PC gaming, the developer and franchise will tell you a lot about a game. Witcher, Metro, Half Life, Duje Nukem, Diablo and Serious Sam rank among the favs

The list is long for games I'd otherwise have never played if it wasn't for others telling me to...

Word of mouth is strong, even and maybe especially in the internet days.

It's more like what I won't play.

a) MMOs with an average player base under 25
b) Any single player came that requires me to "log in"
c) Any game that permits "pogosticking" as a target evasion tactic.
d) Any game that utilizes a console like gaming controller

About a) - if you like MMO's in general, I can certainly recommend going back to them once in a while. The playerbase definitely changes over time.

I already have these games and basically only play Grim Dawn today, especially because a new expansion was just released two weeks ago.
When I'll be bored of it, I'll switch to one or the other ones... plenty to keep me busy until the next Top-View fantasy ARPG comes up :)

I'm playing the hell out of Grim Dawn right now. The Oathkeeper opens up SO many cool things. I used to run a very strong acid/poison Witch Hunter... now I'm trying Oath/Occultist to put some nice retribution damage on top. Dreeg's Evil Eye gets some of that too now... along with many other skills. Really cool. And I also get a whopping -65% resistances from the skill trees :p And then there is Bloody Pox for -25% DR... come at me bro

Benchmark Scores Corona 1.3: 3120620 r/s Cinebench R20: 3355 FireStrike: 12490 TimeSpy: 4624
Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Serious Sam, AOE and AOM are games my friends suggested.

Metro, Tomb Raider and Crysis: they were always popping up as benchmarks. So I got curious about them.

Portal: because it seemed to be related in someway to HL. And the puzzles looked really interesting.

Jedi Academy, X-Wing vs TIE fighter and X-Wing Alliance: Me being a Star Wars fan. I don't care about Battlefront, though.

Some others, like Rime, Hyper Light Drifter, Dust: An Elysian Tail and Ni No Kuni... I don't remember, honestly, but I think it was because of their story. Ni no Kuni featuring Ghibli's style made it all the more attractive.

In many cases, however, I do check reviews and scores, although there are exceptions. No Man's Sky being one of them. I enjoy the game, but not as much as I could because my PC is not powerful enough and the fact that I cannot fly the damn ships using an actual joystick instead of a gamepad...

Checking reviews from both professional reviewers-gamers and users in steam or forums and watching gameplay videos help muchly. Waiting to get the game on sale helps much to have it patched up usually. Sadly, exceptions exist to this.

Rime is on sale at the moment, that looks great.

I look for unique experiences that won't consume my entire life's limited hours. (I'm looking at you MMO's)
Fun!!! And some of the puzzles, ok over half, are tough enough to keep me trying again and again for an hour at a time.
