Do you guys have any other techniques other than the "I'm poor people." technique? I'm thinking of pulling a trigger on a Ryzen 1700 and an aorus k7 now (as in now since it is availble and its like a 30 min trip) but I'm thinking waiting for the Crosshair Hero 6 and 1600x would be a good idea. How do you all deal with these dilemma?

I buy a Ryzen 7 1700 and Crosshair VI hero :). The crosshair vi needs a lot of UEFI improvements, otherwise it is a well built board.

Get married,

I can confirm as a matter of fact, that this method does indeed work. Regardless of whether we like it or not

Having kids is another method which works too. Basically either method will work at killing any notions of spontaneity in general

I would buy new stuff all the time a few years back, but nowadays there really isn't much that compels me to buy immediately. Improvements are too incremental and also got sick of paying early adopter tax.

Well, to be honest, I have 4 kids and a wife, but buy what I want. It's not like I use HER money. :p But I always discuss it first, and make sure it's all good. The worst I've been told is "I want one too!" :nutkick:

But really, I have that freedom because of most this:

I would buy new stuff all the time a few years back, but nowadays there really isn't much that compels me to buy immediately. Improvements are too incremental and also got sick of paying early adopter tax.

It does of course help that my PC parts are free, but the guitars and RCs are not. It does alsohelp that I involve the kids in all my hobbies, so in the end, I'm never buying stuff just for myself; I play with my toys with my kids. It's really just a matter of being reasonable, and that does tend to come with age.

Get married, give wallet to wife. You won't have any dilemma, because you won't be buying ANYTHING. :p

You could also buy the ASRock Taichi... it's $50 cheaper than the ASUS.
lol

I convinced my girlfriend to buy me RAM.

The thing is my AIO wont have the am4 brackets ready until May. I can get the 1700 since it would have a cooler on it and get the K7. But I feel I'm going to loose a lot with the high clocks and xfr of the 1600x. And the only decent x370 boards available here are the Aorus K7 and K5, Msi xpower and pro carbon.

Itching again.:banghead:o_O:banghead:

Speaking of toys. I got more than enough money saved up while waiting for Ryzen but then I saw a rare toy really cheap so I bought it and this happened for several weeks. I'm afraid I would have spent all my money buying useless things that I don't need before buying the useless thing I need.

Like others said, marriage is a turning point for boys to become men.

Upgrade itch? That's for kids or uncommitted men. Paying for mortgage comes first and foremost as well as putting food on the table.

My budget per month on hardware is 400 CAD (+ - 10%). It's something that's set & negotiated. If I want to build a big rig, I have to buy components one by one each month. Still, I try not to use it.

Therefore, I can never buy 1080ti or anything like that.

LoL. Been there, done that, for sure. But then, so ya gotta wait a bit and save some more... meh. @alucasa said it pretty fairly. :p Budgeting 101... buy a book called "The Wealthy Barber", and do what it says. You always get out of things what you give to them. ;)

Spread my hobbies around. I learned that there's much more to life as I got older and found computers are not the end all to be all.

With that said I will build a new badass 2160p rig....but my itch was scratched many years ago. Way more patient now :)

I've been planning dual socket 2683v3 rig for weeks now.

I gotta blame Ryzen tho. Since Ryzen's release, high end xeons on ebay went up a bit (10%).

I go visit my friends with more expensive systems than me, do benchies and realise my overclocked older hardware (GPU aside) is faster than theirs.

I mean i have a skylake build thats slower than a 3rd gen i5 i use as a HTPC, shits just silly

I have a lot of things I wanna buy too but having little money.

Upgrade itch is a never ending cycle. I realised over time that thinking long term for buying an item or whatver item is important. This would reduce the junk or unneeded item and repeated buying of those things.

Rather than buying new, maintainaince and taking care of our existing item so that is almost like the first time we bought it is important. I wasted money rebuying things that got damaged and faulty. It takes a combination of luck, skill and knowhow for the maintainance and being happy with our existing thing to work.

Buying items you want when price is low after keeping track of prices saved alot. This still requires strict discipline that those are the things you want or need.

I have no solid advise, I am still experimenting balancing on my hobby and daily needs.

I genuinely love building,& working on computers, but one thing I personally have noticed over the years is that MOST of the time people don't need the upgrade they sink money into. Either that or the increase in performance is so minimal That its just not worth the cash spent on it.users upgrade because they are getting 55fps instead of 60-65, or they drop $500+ on. 2-4K monitor, then they have to buy a new cpu & gpu to drive it which costs another $1000 or more , all for a clearer picture, or higher refresh rate, that they may WANT or LIKE but certainly dont NEED. At the end of the day, 90% of us could get by with a pentium, and a mid range gpu..theres a reason we tend to have fond memories of the "old days" when we didnt have the $ to make regular upgrades...we had those parts for so long we grew attached to them, & the more often we upgrade, the less users seem to "enjoy" their components..this is my personal opinion, please don't crucify me for sharing it.:fear:

I genuinely love building,& working on computers, but one thing I personally have noticed over the years is that MOST of the time people don't need the upgrade they sink money into. Either that or the increase in performance is so minimal That its just not worth the cash spent on it.users upgrade because they are getting 55fps instead of 60-65, or they drop $500+ on. 2-4K monitor, then they have to buy a new cpu & gpu to drive it which costs another $1000 or more , all for a clearer picture, or higher refresh rate, that they may WANT or LIKE but certainly dont NEED. At the end of the day, 90% of us could get by with a pentium, and a mid range gpu..theres a reason we tend to have fond memories of the "old days" when we disnt have the $ to make regular upgrades...we had those parts for so long we grew attached to them, & the more often we upgrade, the less users seem to "enjoy" their components..this is my personal opinion.

thats what my secondary system does, cost me <$500 and dominates 1080p gaming with ease.

Well I barely eat each month. But I spent a huge fraction of what I get on this thing..... including 1/3 of what I have to live on after rent just for cable. Just spent the last of my food money
for April to buy more ram. How's that for dedication?
