I use 3in1 oil. I might try out some GT85 at some point. Usually use it to oil up my bike chains.

Benchmark Scores 2cm mark on bench with a razor blade.
You oil the blades? Keep them clean to prevent dirt from sticking. 3in1 works well but I use automotive 20w50 synthetic motor oil on my fan bearings. If you use an air compressor to blow off the dust, hold the blades still. Don't let them spin up or you risk blowing the fan's drive circuit. Since the motors are PM-BLDC based, they generate a voltage when spun. I've killed them before doing so and also blew out the LEDs. -doh-

$.02 :toast:

In really bad situations I have had to use CRC in the fan blades as well as the dirt had hardened is some cases.
This would most likely be related to people who have a PC in a small room and they smoke it there as well.
I have not tried anything else which can get what seems solidly packed dirt off the blades.

5-56 actually contains moisture, it's not good for long term protection. We've got TONS of rusted out tools down at the yard from people using 5-56. I strongly recommend you use 6-66 instead.

News to me, I just read what the front of the can said.

So far I have only had one fan fail on me after using what I usually use but it turned out to be down to the owner not doing anything about the issue for too long which slightly bent the shaft and damaged the inside of the housing.

I've had great success using soap and water. Just hold the fan so the housing that is covering the motor windings is down over the windings, acts like a cover. Then shake and let dry for a few days... hot car works well..not in direct sunlight. I try not to get the circut board very wet but when I do I just give the whole unit extra drying time. (Have never had a failure)

Have also used vaccum and hogs hair detailing brush. (most used method for entire pc) Brush and hold vaccum just off surface to collect dust.

Compressed air sometimes for PSUs that I don't want to open. In conjunction with vaccum.

Have never used harsh chemical cleaners.

In rare case, for lube I use: Quantum Hot Sauce Reel Oil.

it was mostly the font/text you used that was painful, not the quality of the images.

 Carefull with a vacuum inside a PC. I never recomend it. They can make mad static. Been there, done that, bought new ram. In a pinch just use a hose and put a pen on the end to make a blow gun and start blowin'. Just don't spit on everything.

Did you actually read my post? lol.

I clean the dust off of them with the old hoover and when they start to make noise and get sluggish i use (see the pics bellow)

(read throw them away and buy new. I use Yate loons so its not like they cost alot)

btw i remove the fans before cleaning them to avoid the static problem as posted above.

Did you actually read my post? lol.

Yup. Why do you ask? Sucking or blowing, it's the high speed motor in the vacuum charging the whole thing with static, including the person holding the hose, that's the issue. It only takes reaching in to move a wire aside and having an ark jump off your knuckle to kill something. The first and only time I used a vacuum to clean a pc I killed a stick of ram. Never did it again. Just thought I'd note the risk.

Me too use brush, i think u don't need to oiled the fans first, good fans have good life time, but if you want extra life time i mean after more than 2 years or more sure the fan will be noised so u need to oil it, good motor oil will enough but anyway i see after two times oil it you better replase it.

i've never oiled a single fan in my computers, nor needed to - i tested it years ago on a rattly fan and it stopped the noise problems, but it just kept needing it done more and more and more... its not worth the effort.

you need to pack the void with grease.

also prevention is always better than cure!

i manged to revive an AMD K7 fan this way.

I forgot to mention how I also do maintenance on a noisy fan... I toss them into a bin and go buy another fan. Really for the time it takes to pull the fan apart and clean them.. remove the bearing and such, I already have a brand spankin new fan installed ;)

Really for the price of fans these days, imo it's a waste of time trying to fix a dry bearing issue

I just use a regular painters brush and a can of compressed air.
