i dont see much "hate" and i aint quite sure how the words "toxic or "toxicity" can be applied to a forum post but i do see loads of poor quality false information being posted..

i am anti censorship and it does seem to be on the general increase.. its a shame it has to invade a place like TPU as it seems to be doing..

Well, you know what you see. If anything this keeps posts that would most likely get deleted, still viewable. "Toxicity" is a term used, generally for impolite, rude, berating, annoying, irrelevant, etc. posts that might add to the topic but brings way too much negativity to the conversation. It creates a bad atmosphere for some and that's why we're here.

Benchmark Scores Turns on on the first try! Usually.
So, after reading all 9 pages of this I have to say I agree with the implementation of the "low quality" post window. But also, I'd like to see a simple explanation written in that window giving the reason for the action, e.g. off-topic etc.

I also very much applaud the system @Vayra86 suggested.
Reading this thread I saw only a couple of people mentioning the users that are just looking for answers to problems they have. I've been visiting this forum long before I signed up, because I was looking for answers to the problems I had, and for the most part I found them, or at least an explanation. And that's why I decided to sign up as a proper user.
It's good to look at the site as a tight community, but do you ever wonder how do you appear to the guest looking from the outside, are you giving him reasons to join, to participate?

So please, put yourselves in the shoes of a regular guy, looking for a solution to a screw up, or a tech problem? Do you want condescending answers, completely off-topic discussions or I dunno, politics. No, I bet you do not.
I get that having 100% tech talk all the time might get a bit dry, and occasional condescending comment or a joke is sort of necessary to break up the monotony, but the arguing between users that goes on and on, the politics where they are not necessary and crap like that deserve to be tagged as such, low quality.

Just my 2 cents.

Not for nothin but, some of your supposed 'better' regular members are some of the biggest offenders.
The smug, passive aggressive posts just breed toxicity, yet staff back them almost every single time.
I can't and won't speak for anyone else, but I "back" whomever I "think" is right (based on what my eyes see), not who has been here the longest, to be fair, I don't actually back any member, more I back their content......... there are plenty who have been here a long time that can go off track from time to time, and possibly I include myself there! :D

@trog100 This is not censorship as the post can still be read by anyone, deleting could be considered censorship and this is the point of this trial.

This is not censorship

censorship
ˈsɛnsəʃɪp/
noun
  1. 1.
the suppression or prohibition of any parts of books, films, news, etc. that are considered obscene, politically unacceptable, or a threat to security.
"the regulation imposes censorship on all media"
I'd say having a certain message not show up by default after it was marked as being low quality is certainly a lightweight form of suppression.

I, for one, am taking this one to heart, and recognize it with myself... And do want to apologize for treading the fine line, and crossing it from time to time...

The reason I keep frequenting TPU though is because of the, overall, very good moderation happening here. Common sense and neutrality / fact based support of people and comments is something our mods should be applauded for and I hereby wish to do so.

If this low quality post system is something that works for them, and for TPU, then I will support it. I have enough faith in the mods to do so. At the same time I do believe there are better, more user-engaging systems that can also work to strengthen a community instead of destabilize it, because the potential for the latter is here with the current system. It will take a lot of careful thought and long term vision to keep 'low quality posts' an effective system, and it constantly relies on good moderation. Risky business...

Not sure about that, I am no expert but the fact that it is completely viewable by anyone and everyone makes it borderline (to me) at the least, however my point was that deleting a post most certainly is, and the point of this exercise is also to try and reduce delete's which has historically been less than well received by the community in general.

It's not censorship, its filtering content, and this is extremely common in any environment with information overload ie any place on the internet. As long as it is transparent, the potential damage is rather limited.

Its a hot topic not just here but worldwide, if you think about it: from the 'search bubble' to social media that are required to start moderating.

Its NOT CENSORSHIP if its just hidden but still viewable ( by a ****** Mouse Click :) ).

I can't and won't speak for anyone else, but I "back" whomever I "think" is right (based on what my eyes see), not who has been here the longest, to be fair, I don't actually back any member, more I back their content........

Absolutely Right

Even if the post Content is Truthful and Accurate it is Some time posted in such a way as to be Aggressive/Trolling/Derogativly and then Its up to the Mod to decide if to either Edit/Hide or Delete
If you post as Such and "a Mod" takes Such Action as above and you Object
there is a Set Procedure you can follow

1.Contact the Section Mod by PM.
2. Contact a senior mod by PM.
3. Contact the Admin By PM.

The Above is the Stages of Escalation if your still Unsatisfied at each Stage.l

YOU DO NOT CRAP POST YOU RAGE/FRUSTRATION/EXASPERATION LATER IN THE SAME THREAD.
AND
YOU DON'T START A THREAD COMPLAINING ABOUT THE INJUSTICE YOU FEEL YOU HAVE SUFFERED

as an alternative to anonymous deletion.. its good a idea.. it has my 100% backing..

just be careful and try not to go over the top with user control... use it with "moderation".. :)

I'd rather have the low quality posts rather than completely censor people even if their posts may be toxic.

I'd rather have the low quality posts rather than completely censor people even if their posts may be toxic.

Comments and attitudes like this are a part of the problem this community has been facing as I see it, even well before this thread, years before. It has compounded as the types of members prefer drama and egos over help and quality grow in numbers.

That folks will take a stance like this to support the degradation to the quality of our forums rather than own up, identify and help to fix the problems is clearly why we are forced to delete or hide toxic posts in the first place. Instead of admitting or identifying problems, they'll be shrugged off, treated like no big deal, minimized and carried on as if it is the right way or even only way in their eyes.

However, it is a big deal to them when their posts are deleted or hidden, infractions and bans earned and now instead of them affecting other members, they are being affected by their own words. Even then there are many who fail to see the point or error in their ways. Almost as if they should be entitled to come here and trash the place. No thanks.

Frankly, we wouldn't need to delete or hide posts if members could act right. Really, it is that simple.

I've said it many times before and I'll say again, toxicity has no place on TPU.

So now you're saying that expressed opinions should be censored also?
Isn't this thread basically asking for opinions in the first place?

Slippery slope is very slippery.

Saying you would rather have toxic low quality posts is a rather poor attitude. Why not try to add to the topic rather than fight it. It doesn't have to be all or nothing

Did his post and opinion get censored? Nope. Guess he isn't being censored yet. ;)

If anyone's posts go against the rules and provide unnecessary toxicity to TPU? How do we handle folks that trash topics and insult others? That's why we have deletion and hide post functions in the first place. I'd rather have no reason to use them in all honesty and that's the point you and a handful of others seem keen on glossing over.

Don't get defensive. Especially 'snarky' defensive.
So you just decided to lump me into the class that is not for the toxicity removal. How very good of you, considering I AM for it.
I assume you did that because I did not 100% agree with your post or opinion.
THAT is where the proposed system will fail, because you already have a preconceived notion that I was against the change and you personally just labeled me a trouble maker.

when you do, let me know, i'm always listening

You should let people with long service tags assist you and the rest of the moderation team with marking posts as "low quality" and maybe set a minimum post count limit to it as well to prevent old accounts from popping out of no where and trolling the feature.

Don't get defensive. Especially 'snarky' defensive.

Bickering isn't necessary. Follow the rules, keep toxic BS off of TPU and we have nothing to worry about. Simple as that!

Nice dodge.
This is now an unproductive discussion thread.
It no longer matters what anybody thinks or says because you have already made the decision.
Might as well just hand pick your members because that's what it's going to come down to.

Not at all, nice try though. What we as members choose decides our experience here, which should be obvious by now. If not, feel free to review the forum guidelines and choose to act with or against them, that's what will make the difference. Not me. ;)

Kursah is definitely not that kind of guy and moderator. You sir, on the other hand, should fix this shitty attitude quickly.

A few people are just very good at maximum annoyance and being overall repulsive without breaking the guidelines.
This is right from your own super mod's mouth.
Your system will not remove the toxicity. ;)

My attitude is not the problem.
And who gives you the right to decide if it's shitty or not?
