How Does This Power Supply Look?

Hi 'peeps

I'm upgrading a power supply in my cousins Dell. Its an Ispiron 530 with an intel E6550, dual Burners, two HD's, basic sound card, wireless card, and an 8600GT. Right now he has the stock unit PS. Its rated at 300w with 18 amps on a single 12v rail :/

He wants to be able to run an 8800GT now (he has one) but also midrange cards in the future. Think ATI 4850 or nvidia 9800GTX level. Budget is a concern, so after scouring and researching I found this:

Seems solid but has 14 amps on one 12v rail and 15 amps on the other for a total of 29 amps altogether.

Is this enough? I see some user reviews that say no, some say its just enough, yet others say its plenty enough.

What say the experts here? I was led right to a PS for my own rig here recently, but i had more money to spend and got a nice Corsair. This choice is more budget minded. Its for a Dell, as said.

no, not even close enough. you need at least 26amps on the 12v rail that feeds a 8800Gt series card. I would suggest a Silverstone PSU This one Should be more than good, and it will have enough power to allow for upgrades in the future.

At 650Watts it has enough power and with 54amps on the +12v rail it will be more than enough to power the whole system as well as the graphics card. My friend has a E6850 on a blood iron, with an overclocked eVGA 8800GT AKIMBO series gfx card, tons of hdd's and dvd racks and what not.

I will say tho the 8800 GT card seems to be a powerful card and should cover anything he needs for a long time.

If he's wanting something more powerful later on, he should splurge on the PSU while he can.

Make sure that the dell PSU is a standard ATX. Ive seen a few dells that use some weird psu that you can upgrade with a 3rd party psu.

just to run the 8800GT? forget the other cards mentioned b4. it seems to have everything he needs but i'm pretty sure i've read this brand is not any good. the user reviews are decent, however

i would rather go with Antec Earthwatts 650w pus

cause

1. is a 650w psu
2. raidmax isnt all that great
3. after the shipping is added your spending $65.85
4. Antec psu is 69.99 and free shipping
5. Antec is a well known brand and reliable
6. its only a $4.14 dollar difference and you have a much power for upgrades later on

Raidmax is a bad idea, especially if you're wanting to reliably run an 8800GT. The Antec freak listed is great deal! Only if you're willing to take the bite of the MIR's, the Corsair or PCP&C for $80 are a step better.

Go only with quality brand PSU makers, otherwise your putting your whole system at risk for a huge problem. The 8800GT is a demanding card and as such demands at least 26amps on the +12 volt rail to be run well. I would fork out the money for a quality PSU any day of the week. Otherwise if you go for a cheap psu, you might as well end up buying a whole new computer, because the bad PSU will most likely kill it.

+1 for that, i personally hate dells because i know they have weird set ups, but double check that first.

lol i know you love your Antec but but still, 4 bucks more he can get a 650w and it has better amps.....no? and a much richer upgrade path with the 650w

I was thinking of a different psu on the Antec. Actually, that is not a bad recommendation. I give you a "+1" as most members here would say. Still, the linked PSU in the OP would be pretty good due to the rebate.

I'll second the suggestion for the Antec 650. It's what I have and is very quiet.

You only need 17a for a 8800GT + dual core Intel. And its not 54amps, they don't add together they are two separate amps.

where did you get 17a for a 8800GT requirements? my GT KO required 26a on the +12v rail. And that PSU i selected supplies 54a on the 12v rail because its single not a dual rail. the PSU i have (the OP800w) supplies over 60a on the 12v.

Heres the 8800GT SC edition Go halfway down the page and read under minimum system requirements

# Minimum of a 400 Watt power supply.
(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 22 Amp Amps.)
# Minimum 450 Watt for SLI mode system.
(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 24 Amp Amps.)
