6GB is more than enough. 4GB is good enough really. I get by with 3GB just fine too.

The bigger the frame buffer, the less it has to refer to main system ram.

AMD R7970 had 6GB, now Nvidia does with the 780ti.

It's 2017, right? The GTX 1060 and the GTX 980Ti also have 6GB of memory. I have a 980 Ti and it does fine with current games but I only have a 1080P monitor.

Yuppers, I think they were the only ones to release such a board ahead of its time. The MSI 7970 Lightning BE didnt have 6GB either. The only other to have 6GB total was 7990

"A board ahead of its time"? Putting 6GB on a 7970 is like putting lipstick on a pig. Sounds good on paper maybe. In reality though...it's almost useless.

Let me quote from the 280X 6GB review in regards to performance vs. the 280X 3GB. Since we all know they're basically the same as an HD 7970.

The extra memory doesn't provide any performance benefit at resolutions below 4K (including EyeFinity). Only at 4K did we find a tiny performance increase by another 2%, which is certainly not significant, especially not on a card like the R9 280X that is simply too weak to drive a 4K monitor at decent framerates. I would say the R9 280X offers excellent performance at 1080p, since you can still max out the details settings, including anti-aliasing. Our benchmarks conclusively show that there is absolutely no reason to double the video memory for a total of 6 GB at 1080p.

The 280X launched in 2013, remember this is 2017 now, so there are cards with 6gb Since 2016, which tends to be used more than before. Also the 780 series had 6gb models too. So I honestly feel your point made is worthless to the convo now.
