How I killed a 9600GT within less then 24hrs of owning it

In this rare situation it could be Vista's fault for not identifying your card correctly. Either way from what you have described the card isn't physically broken and it is most probably a software issue - you said it yourself that the drivers installed are conflicting.

Stop listening to the guys that are saying bring the card back, why would you return a card that is not physically faulty? it wasn't your graphics card fault that Vista installed the wrong drivers. If you can somehow boot with your old graphics card or with your on-board graphics in safe mode and attempt uninstall all the graphics card related drivers and do a registry clean, and then put in your 9600GT - But the bottom line is you don't fix a driver issue by replacing a card that is not responsible. TPU stop giving Xazax bad advice

When I had my 4CoreDual vista always gave me a black screen when using my 7950GT and that board with any drivers but when I changed the board out everything worked fine, it was wierd but the card died shortly afterwards (about 2 days).

Ok, Darren but what can i do? I cant use the 9600GT its just a black screen and the fan speeds at %100 and doesnt stop when i put in the PCI-E slot. What may of happened is the BIOS in the card is damaged, so like said before REFLASHING the card MAY work and solve it, but im too lazy when there a BB not 3 miles away from my house... , im using 174.74 Drivers btw for both the 9600GT and 7300GS, the 7300GS has no problems. i simply swapped it out and everything runs.

Xazax, I would recommend if you do any hardware upgrades, you reinstall windows. The 9600gt constitutes a reinstall of Windows.

I read somewhere a few weeks ago when the cards first came out of a similar problem with a guy on another forum, the advice there was to do a blind reflash of the Video BIOS which turned out to work as the Video BIOS some how got corrupted but that guy also seemed to think it wa Vista related, but he got it working again!

If the system doesn't post with the 9600GT it is most probably a hardware issue with the 9600 GT indeed in which case it's faulty and I would return it if possible, maybe attempt the flashing the bios first as someone else suggested. I feel the Vista update issue coincidentally happened just before the 9600 GT failed but they are definitely unrelated.

So if we are out ruling software issues both driver and operating system and we are concentrating on a faulty 9600GT hardware issue one has to ask oneself why did the card fail? Was it overheating somewhat? or was it just a bad batch? You said earlier to attempted to over clock the card prior to it failing could that of contributed to the card failing?

So not but yesterday, i ran down to my local BestBuy and picked up a PNY 9600GT to play with(they have a 30 day return policy, so basically i go there try out any GFX card and return then buy one i liked from newegg.com!) and give it a whirl.

Everything goes great play some Company heroes without a hitch, OC it a bit to 750/1000 and run some benchies then whilst browsing my favorite tech site(TPU ) boom! BSOD!!!! OUT OF FRIGGIN NO WHERE. I plug back in my 7300GS i was just previously using and find out that VISTA KILLED MY 9600GT.

How? easy, i have an Abit 630a with an onboard 7025, Vista apparently thought i "needed drivers for the onboard" and when it finished installing it gave me the BSOD because i have the onboard GPU disabled, so obviously a conflict arouse between the onboard and 9600GT that some how ended up killing the 96000GT. All it does now when i plug it in is spin the fan at %100 forever until i shut down the computer. Upon using onboard, everything is fine, EXCEPT booting into Vista, it just gives me a black screen and nothing.

So, there you go, i(more like Vista!) killed a GFX card worth $200(though i wont tell bestbuy that wink, wink, ) and now my onboard is about as use-full as it was before.

So now im back to the 7300GS... within less then 24 hours of owning a PNY 9600GT

i think that the OS cant actually kill the card, but i do wholeheartedly believe that vista royally fucked you in the ass and didn't let you do what you want (driver-wise), thats what vista is best at in my experience, how about the classic line..... "Windows is searching for a solution to the problem..." lol

very sorry to hear about it, and i truly doubt you are the colossal newb people have been calling you in this thread, as vista is possibly the stupidest and worst running OS i have used in a LONG time.

Methinks the card wasn't seated/installed properly, and when it somehow came loose Vista decided there was no more graphics card installed, so it went to install onboard.

That, or its just a known problem of the 9600GT/chipset/etc (thats mentioned above) .

This is the most ridiculous post I've seen in a long time, you have officially wasted 40 seconds of my life listening to your nonsense.

An operating system whether XP, 2000, Vista, is unable to damage your video card in any capacity in which you have described. Obviously your graphics card isn't physically damaged so one would suggest booting into a safe mode equivalent and uninstalling and removing the incorrect drivers from the registry. Failing that your forced to re-install Vista fresh after a format. The only thing Vista could be responsible for is allowing YOU to install the wrong drivers but as I said your card isn't physically damaged as that would be impossible to every single degree possible.



Stop encouraging Xazax's nonsense, Xazax's card is obviously not damaged by his operating system, it's just a mere driver conflict. Although there were some fault early 9600GT's initially on release but it would usually bring upon an error or black screen after a few hours of game play! - But as far as Vista causing damage, nonsense.

im going to say this, your mileage will vary, always try small incriments.
