How many times does your WindowsXP bar roll by during startup?

I find my OS to be extraordinarily slow at startup, the damn bar runs 17 tims across before going on. :banghead:

I don't really count how many times that little bar runs across the screen...but I do count how long it takes for windows to start. The time it takes from the drive spinning up to windows being usable is about 37 seconds. It used to take over two minutes, I'm happy

Oh yeah my SATA drive is retarded...it takes a couple seconds to spin up and my motherboard posts BEFORE the thing has spun up, so it doesn't even detect the drive :laugh:

. A quick reset usually fixes the problem, but I'd hate to see what a "normal" user would think when they see "please reboot and select proper boot device" lol.

Mine take I don't know how long until I can do something on it. It used to be really fast, then slowed down, I don't have any startup programs except the main ones that I need...does anybody know what could be slowing me down starting up..any help would be most appreciated.

Mine used to go through once, but after I formatted it has gone up to three times when it's tweaked, I can take it back down to one if I disable prefetching (or the 'task scheduler' service which has the same effect) but then the overall time it takes to load is longer. From hard drives spinning up to everything in windows being fully loaded = just over 30 secs. I'm pleased

msconfig in run then take away programs that startup, some you dont even know start up, make sure you dont take away any of the microsoft programs you eed to run windows tho

4. When it restarts bootvis should reload go "Trace >Optimize System"
5. After it reboots, leave it for 5 minutes to do it's job (or until the window disappears)
6. Enjoy 30 second or better boot times (not guarenteed!!!)

Also: DO NOT DISABLE TASK SCHEDULER SERVICE!!! A lot of people don't realise this is actually responsible for prefetching which can help make you programs (and Windows) load much faster. You can get Bootvis here.

I already have 30-second or less boot times

. I actually counted the bar moving, it scrolls 8 times for XP and 16 times for Vista. It isn't that bad, once the thing is actually loaded everything else goes really fast.

dont delete your prefetch normally windows is then free for formatting

use xp reg tune if you can read it ;P

You saying if you delete everything in your prefetch it will mess up XP? No chance of that, perhaps if you were to delete the folder itself it might, not emptying the contents.

It sometimes does, apparently XP does everything that it does to optimize itself, but I find it has a great improvement on my boot times.

Hey, I don't know if you've seen this yet, but if you haven't, it should help you on your boot up time. It helped my time drop by about 7 seconds at least.

On Windows Server 2003 SP#1 fully hotfix patched as of June:

Once I am out of the POST screens for my BIOS & PCI-e Caching HDD controller, which take a bit of time (controller checks the disks in the RAID 0 setup is why for integrity etc.)?

4 scrolls of the progress bar.

* Takes me around 8-9 seconds to reach logon into the OS... you HAVE to sign on & all that, & that takes 3-4 seconds for the Explorer.exe GUI to initialize pretty much!

P.S.=> This is a direct result of several things done here imo... first being hardware setup:

My disk subsystem (fastest disks I could get ahold of @ the time of its build 3-4 months back, & best access/seek times also driven off a 128mb caching RAID 0 controller, driving those 2 Raptors @ 10k rpm each & 16mb buffers each).

Software/OS side too:

Via the placement of my pagefile.sys & temp ops via environment variable "hacks" onto a solid-state drive + other OS hacks for performance as well, they DO matter!
