hmmm, im running 600 watts. One 4850 alone I think calls for a 500 watt power supply. If you buy new PSU I would get atleast 700

I would say that 600W would be just enough, but you may want to get one that is a little bit larger just in case.

I would give it a go first, if you then need more power...buy a new PSU.
OCZ makes nice ones.

For one card, the current PSU might be ok, but I would buy a 700w+ PSU if you plan on running two. Even on one card though, 420w is pushing it.

My corsair hx620w had no problems running two 4850's on a relatively low powered machine. Deffinitely buy something quality, and the more power the better. :)

It definitely depends on the power supply quality. My 400W is more than capable for my Phenom/3870 combo. In fact, this PSU is listed by AMD as compatible with the 3870x2! I'm very partial to Enermax (although there new stuff is rediculously expensive). I'm ready to try the Corsair HX 520 if I ever go crossfire.

As Tim "The tool man" Taylor would say "MORE POWER!!!!" A 420w is good for an X1800Xt, not a 4850. I would go for at least a 600w. Corsair, epower, FSP, Sparkle all make good supplies.

its not the wattage but the amps on the 12v rail you need to consider.
A 4850 only peaks at 110 watts.
unless you have 4 or 5 extra hard drives, 6+ fans, cathodes, more then 2 optical drives, powering a small 3rd world country you wont need a psu that has more then 500watts
As long as you have atleast 26+ amps on the 12v rail you should be fine

You dont really need to get more power. People prefer high wattage PSUs because when they first came out they were the most reliable. With advanced cooling that is no longer the case. So the TR2 is good enough, unless if it gets too hot. If that is the case, get a Corsair HX520 and call it day.

What calculations are you using to come to this conclusion?

PSU is rated:

Output +3.3V@20A, +5V@30A, +12V@18A, -5V@0.5A, -12V@0.8A, +5VSB@2A

Elighten us please as to why it is not enough power...

One 18A 12V rail is a tad low in my opinion as to why the PSU would fail to power things correctly!

This also shows the 4850 has potential to draw over 200W of your PSU as it is( http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Powercolor/HD_4850_PCS/24.html ). so that leaves 220W for the rest of the rig. Thats thoretical as 420W will not be attained due to the percentage of efficiency of your PSU!

ATI recommends a 450 Watt or greater power supply to run an HD 4850. The 420w Thermaltake TR2 is a little on the light side. You could try it and see if you encounter any problems.

If you would like a low cost, quality replacement, the Antec Basiq BP500UB 500W for only $39.99 would be a nice choice.

I was using a 500W with my old X2 3600 and X1800XT. A 550 with E4300 and 8600GTS, that same 550 couldn't power my HD2900XT, so I got my 750W Toughpower. He NEEDS more power. At least 600W.

agreed i couldn't get crossfire on my x2 4200 and 2gb ddr2 @ 1.8 volt without a corsair 620HX.
