Hey guys so I recently bought an MSI GTX 980 Gaming 4G and noticed that even just unpacking it that it seemed bent (like an upside-down 'U'). The area just to the right of the right SLI finger seeming the 'highest' point with both the bracket end and PCIe power connector end seeming lower (though the PCIe power connector end MUCH lower.

Another concern is that I plan to get another one in the next month or so and I'm afraid that it will contact the top of the sound card.

Check out the photo to see what I mean.

I've still got 1 week left on my DOA return policy so I can return it if I need to.

I'd RMA it. While big is beautiful that's just too saggy for me.

Them curves though.

If it was bent already when you unpacked it, I'd say it was a return.
I've had large cards that have bent over time due to their weight, but never right out of the box.
You could always get a backing plate for it.

I'd also say return it if at all possible. That is quite a warp in the PCB, and it won't get any better over time.

What if he baked it? I'm sure a little seasoning would help.

Reroute the power cables to help support it. Or put a jack on it. There not going to RMA for sag unless it stops working

use zip ties from the PCI-E cables to the water pipes on your CPU cooler to stop it flexing further.

warranty if it you want, but all the modern heavy cards do it to one extent or another.

^This. It isn't unheard of for modern cards to bend a little, probably one of the reasons why back plates are becoming more common. In fact, my GPU has done it for well over 2 years, and still works fine:

personally i don't like a bendly card, and i got a GTX 970 mine don't really bend as far as i remember, plus mine don't hang in a screw and pci-e lane, mine is more laying down and chill in my BitFenix Prodigy i would call the company u purchased it from and hear if an RMA is possible when email them the pic and say u ain't really feeling sure that the card will last long when he looks like this, or something like that.

BY all means RMA if you are worried, that's what it's there for, but it isn't out of the ordinary, in my opinion. You have a bracket that supports it up to just after the second SLI 'finger', that's why it remains flat until there. Then, due to the weight of the cooler, it will naturally bow a little towards the rear of the card. As the PCIe slot supports the other side, further along the length of the card, you'll notice the the rear side closest to you will taper towards the power plugs. As Jetster said, try supporting it a little with the power cables or readjusting the PCIe brackets to lower the card slightly, reducing the pressure.

Buy a back plate for it if you can find one. IMO it should have come with one. They really help with the "droop".
EDIT: Just checked and could not find one for this card. That really sucks.

I've seen that happen on occasion with warped cards. Sometimes the warp will make the card line up with the PCI-E slot, but throw out the alignment at the rear I/O. Once you screw the I/O plate down, it causes the PCB to bow. In a bad card it means that the rear I/O plate screws can't really be tightened up too much or the PCI-E goldfinger can creep out of the slot. I had a HD 5970 with that particular problem - and those things came with a backplate.

I used to use old valves from my Chrysler rebuilds. The are heavy enough to be stable, and a relatively easy to affix an upper support (either thread and nut, or spot weld a washer). Probably cost you next to nothing at an engine rebuilders if you don't have that sort of thing handy.

Ok well after the first few people said they would return it if possible, I thought I'd contact my shop and explain the situation. They said sure thing and to bring it down to show them. The guy there was like holy crap that's bad. Essentially it looks like the small brace going from the PCI bracket to just near the SLI fingers has not been folded properly and the card has then been attached to it causing the upside-down 'U' shaped bend (high point being just to the right of the SLI fingers). He said for sure they'd take it, I paid the difference (~$50AUD) and moved to the Asus Strix version that has the backplate. I opened it in the store just to compare and without a doubt the Asus card was straight as an arrow, MSI on the other hand well...

I've installed in since and it is MUCH better now I just have the typical sag being a straight sag (albeit only a tiny, tiny amount of sag), instead of the warping. The card feels much stronger too overall.

IMG_9796.JPG

Thanks guys for your input. I've used high-end cards in the past (e.g Gigabyte GTX 580 SOC & 780 Windforce) without backplates and they only had a tiny amount of sag like this Asus. I've never seen warping as bad as that MSI.

That's a good shop to work with on this
The only hassle I had with them was when I had a faulty X99 mobo (Gigabyte X99-Gaming 5) where they refused to say that is was faulty. It took about a month and speaking with the manager (I also wrote up a legal statement showing the clauses of the Australian Consumer Law they had broken) before I was able to pay the difference and step up to the Asus X99-Deluxe.

I think they have learned their lesson haha, since then and also before that they have been SUPER helpful. I am now returning to shop there after this good experience.
