The current price/performance is a complete rip-off. I would have gone with the following:

$650 After sales tax for RTX4080
$700 After sales tax for OC variants of the RTX4080

$775 After sales tax for the inevitable RTX4080Ti
$825 After sales tax for the OC variants of the RTX4080Ti

Wait 2-3yr

Have you heard about lowering the settings? No one must play at maxed out all the time.

Also, it is not a given that the new games will be more demanding for hardware resources, if optimized they can be actually running even at 4320p alongside 2160p just fine.

As the 30 series supply dwindles, now, only 20 left, I keep fantasizing about a 8704 or 8192 Cuda 4080 variant. In its current state 4080 can't be salvaged or corrected. there is no room left in the line up. Nvidia was bluffing with 4080 12, now 4070 Ti, and it still looks like there could be another SKU in between to justify the lower price, something like 3060 Ti. 4080 being the 3070 type of thing.

Not much more than my 2080 Super, so that's around £800.

Current prices are insane and while I could stretch to it, I won't out of principle. Think about it, these cards are primarily for playing games on. That's a lot of money for a glorified console, a toy. And that stupid power connector burns up, too. I'm not paying for a flaw like that.

First world problems.

The RTX 4080 gives a bigger Performance jump then ever. It should have been tied with the 3090 or at most 3090Ti for a 699/799$ Card, but it is even better faster.
Because of that i'd say a Price of 899-999$ would be fine.
That said, it would have been better to call it a 4080Ti....but then what does Nvidia call the Card that sits in the biiiig Gap between the 4080 (Ti) and 4090?

Not really, 69, 45, 66, 49, respectively, it's just a regular jump. And compared to the 1080, this is a 4070 Ti at best. 699 seems reasonable given the bad economics. 799 in case it deserves to be a 4080.
4090 msrp at launch is $100 more than a 3090 msrp and 4070 Ti should also be no more than $100 than 3070 Ti msr.

Interesting observation is that the generational leap each 4 years is 2,5. 1080 at 40% of 3080, 2080 is 40% of 4080 and so on. So 5080 should kick ass again with 66 ish %.

$600 is my final answer. For any GPU honestly.

There are 2 Types of upgrades. The first is the generational Upgrade, which means getting a better GPU for "better/newer" Games.
The other is increasing ones resolution, playing in 4k instead of 1440p.
The latter was always more expensive, but if you wait enough, it can become the norm after some time. A 6060 for 400$ example might be strong enough for 4k120FPS, since the developement of Graphics are much slower.

750-800 Dollars seems like a decent price for a 4080, and if a 4080 Ti comes out it should be 850-900.

While I get your point and agree.

Do you see how easily these companies are getting away with the bulls#17 MSRP nonsense, a couple hundred cards at MSRP at times then none and 1.5X the price,,, Then gets recalled and remembered like this.

Like MSRP means anything, like it was is true.

It's Balllllls and has been years now.

My punch line after of two decades of wisdom (professional PC computing).
Mid-range gaming graphics cards these worth to me 350 Euro as Max.
Even with RTX5080 you can not gain much within a game full of cheaters, and a game company this be in denial to fight the problem (EA Sports).

What if the 4080 12GB was the real 4080, while the 4080 16GB was supposed to be the 4080Ti. People didn't want the 4080 12GB, so NVidia called it the 4070Ti. Now everyone is confused...

4080-12 is RTX 4060 with a fake name to charge you more.

nvidia is moving the tiers, so that it correspondingly adjusts the money-grabbing dirty schemes.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti is already on sale in Serbia, costs 1400 US Dollars - VideoCardz.com

Cuda-Cores doesn't matter, DIE-Size doesn't matter, Memorybus doesn't matter. NAMING doesn't matter (for people like us at least).
There are only 3 things that are important:
Performance, efficiency and VRAM.

The 4070Ti has (much) better Perf/W and better Perf/$ then last Gen.
12GB VRAM might be enough or might be not. The closest last Gen Cards are the 3090 or 3090Ti and both have 24GB.
