how often do you upgrade your gpu?

i remember when everyone on here was all going on about the hd 4850 and how that was the next best thing since sliced bread and now looking through pps system specs allot of you, including my self, own one. But now with the new 5x cards comeing out ive heard allot about them so how many of you are actually going to stick with the cards you own or upgrade to the newest card? im just curious

I'm gonna upgrade but i'm gonna wait to, There really is no reason to upgrade and probably wont be until 2011, that being said I'm gonna wait for the black friday/Cyber monday sales (2009)

now that i dont understand my rig can play games on my screen fairly acceptably, so my point being shorely a biger screen doesnt requie tones and tones of more proccessing power and the medium- high range systems can handle to most moddern games out and some to come for a while so why do you upgrade to the next best thing? same with i7 as another example. And i dnt believe it when people say 'to future proof it' coz they must now they'l buy the next best thing after that i just crnt get my head around this

I upgrade once or twice per generation of GPU's and I like to try both brands. It's a hobby.

People with money to spend are going to upgrade to the "latest and greatest", whether it's necessary or not. Unfortunately for my wallet, I'm in this club.

Once every 6 months. Well it's only really once ever but it's been 6 months since my last one lol. I probably won't do it again in 6 months. EDIT: No reason for me to upgrade really, HTPC card, it's silent/passive so no need to get new card or cooler for noise and it plays Blu-ray and 1080p video, not that great for games, I might get the 4670 as it's better for games.

I used my 8800 GTX for 2 1/2 years (first stock, then overclocked using an Arctic Cooling Accelero Extreme) before I got a GTX 260 (216). That's A LOT longer than usual!

If i had the money i would upgrade every year 4 sure, but they way im going its more like every 1.5/2yrs But i think once a year is good to keep up with games.

now thats a bit more understandable a full rig upgrade id do that, if i had the money.
I understanda bit about the 'want' to upgrade but arn't you guys past the need? I mean you you can go from 60 fps to 160 but the game will look exactly the same maxed out.
I understad there may be other task that need the extra proccessing power like advanced video additing or some physics analyzer in a lab somewhere but for the most part its that reason that i dont understand the need.

I think upgrades here on TPU are mostly driven from the itch to play with new hardware. erocker's e8600 is an incredible chip, yet he wants to upgrade...

When it comes to a DirectX upgrade I wait til the 2nd generation comes out but once they come out I'm like a ATI gpu whore and will try almost every ATI card of that generation.

I upgrade my setup when it can't play new games on high settings at acceptable frame rates(30-45 FPS).

I think i am going to upgrade but i'm not sure it depends on a few things
1.do i have to money to waste
2.can i still play the games that i want with good FPS and at least med settings (no AA)
3.did i kill my card that i have now yet <--if that happens the first 2 don't apply anymore)
4.What OS i am using (i am back at XP for now but i may get Windows 7)

I upgrade my GPU every 6 months or so...not necessarily to the "latest and greatest" but definately and upgrade. My last upgrade was to add another 4850 for xfire. I truly am looking forward to the HD5000 series, but I might just grab a pair of 4890s when the prices drop because of the HD5000 launch and go DX11 in December-January after the new NVidia cards drop...then buy a pair of HD5000 cards when the prices drop due to the NVidia launch. I just wait for the best "bang for buck" on high performance cards.

I upgrade when I can't run things at the settings I like them to be at (Maxed out, with AA and AS being those settings). Being one of the apparently few people who love Crysis, I sold my 8800GT SLI for the HD4870X2 I am running now (Back then it was with a Q6600 on the P5N32-E SLI - That board sucked !) to properly max it out last summer. Quite frankly, unless DX11 bring something really special to the board, I suspect this HD4870X2 is going to serve me for a long time in my main rig (And definitely in my secondary rig for even longer).
