Same here.
C64, 1980, age 13.
Didn't go to a 'proper' PC until 1993 - DOS 5 & Win 3.1
AMD 386DX40 - 105MB Fuji HDD - 4MB RAM.
Added a co-pro within a year, so my late wife could do some POVRAY rendering, without having to wait 3 bloody days for a single picture XD

Early 20s, first contact with a computer was in college. It was an IBM PC with 8088 cpu and dual 5 1/4" floppies and 256k ram. Within a month I was already writing small apps in debug. Eventually got my own pc with an 8088, which I upgraded to a v20 cpu. Been upgrading ever since!

forget the name of the magazine..
it would include code for games and some apps..
Was it "Compute!"?
There were a few others: in that time frame.
I subscribed to one which included a bar code scanner for the TI-99/4A, it was called DataBar OSCAR.

However, I got my start at 16 on an IBM system/360 model 40.
Keypunching hollerith code on 80 column cards from handwritten Fortran and Cobol lines of code, then sorting, collating, then to the 360 for running for errors, fixing, and do it all again, 'til debugged.
Then, the printers were as large as a sedan and almost as complicated to work on. Monitors/displays what were they, we had no such thing. In the end, you got a print-out of your finished product.
Games ha-ha - that was the game!

EDIT:

a break every once in awhile.

You still gotta throw in the girls and football, every once in awhile.:toast:

I was 12 when I first had my first computer, an Apple IIe I believe. It was like 1985. I remember playing the Ultima series on it, and a text based football game that was called "Steelers vs. Raiders", or something like that. When I started High school in 1987, I lost interest. There were more important things to do like football and girls. Honestly, I didn't get back into computers until like 9 years ago. Since then, it's been an obsession with a break every once in awhile.

Killed a motherboard the same way on my very first build. At last count, not including tons of miscellaneous upgrades, I've built around 150-160 systems for myself, family and customers.

I was about 7 when my family got our first PC. I remember it - Socket 7 Intel Motherboard, Pentium 1 75 Mhz, 32 MB RAM, Trident PCI graphics. One of my dad's friends put it together for us. This is what created my interest in PCs.

I remember using dial up back in late 1995 on this machine using... of course... Windows 95. I played tons of DOS games on this machine. Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Doom, Duke Nukem, Hexen. I'm proud to say I played a shooter first with a mouse and keyboard.

Umm, I don't know what speed it was.. I'm sure is was, at most 286... Using DOSSHELL, funny, back then (about 9yrs old/1997) I thought it spelled DOSS HELL, I thought "that's an awesome name". I played family feud most of the time, experimented with files and wondering what they could do.. just barely crawling in the pc scene.. then a year later I bought a Maximum PC magazine.. Was I shocked.. wow.. what the hell was I using?! :p

Windows 3.1, on a 386. I was around 4. My first computer I had given to me was a 5150, and I soon upgraded to a Pentium 1 that I found on the side of the road.

That would be the first thing to do...:p

As for my first PC it was the Vic-20 i was about 12 years old then later 286 ,386 , Pentium ,etc...

My first one that really belong to me & built it my self was P1 90Mhz & Voodoo3 i soon discover overclocking & was running 120Mhz in no time
later i went true a few CPU a 133@180 , 166@200 , 233@290 never stop overclocking since then , every PC i had was overclock to max :D
From there i went to a P2 , P3 , AMD socketA in 2001 , have been using AMD ever since... Wow! 10 years of using AMD CPU's
You can all call me the AMD expert now

1992 I guess, I was 6. It was some POS 486 laptop, used to play a vampire game on it. Had windows 3.1 on it. You always had to pound on the hard drive to get it to start.
