I was 19, I lived with my GF at the time, never turned a modern pc on and the last interaction I had was with an early 90's apple mac playing chucky egg. The 1sdt PC I owned was an Pentium 1 75 mhz with a 4gb HDD and upgraded voodoo 2 16mb running win 95, I was 19 at the time, I swiftly moved on to a P11 250mhz and proceeded to add an ADSL PCI modem and install Win XP despite people saying it would run like a bag of shite, needless to say it did so I built my 1st pc, an AMD Athlon XP 1900+ palamino with 512mb ddr1 and an geforce 4 64mb W/80GB HDD....... it kicked ass and well the rest is history, now I have to spend more on every new build than I ever have previously lol

When I was 9 there were no PCs. The internet did not exists and browsing was something you did at department stores
No such thing as a cell phone, and you still "dialed" the regular phone.
Color TVs were rare (but available if you could afford one).
Kids went outside and played (I know it's a foriegn concept to some of you).
There was no such thing as "inline" skates (rollerblades).
We got hurt all the time at the parks on the playground equipment and no one got sued as our parents knew we were the stupid ones and the reason we got hurt.
We used to build model ships and set them on fire with gasoline in mock naval battles.
We could have killed you from 30 yards with a slingshot and stones from practicing since we were old enough to hold one.

Okay ... I'll stop rambling. lol

When I was 9 my cousin's were drafted to Vietnam. The next year was the Tet offense. One died one got hit with an RPG in a truck and then sent home. Instead of computers
we all had schwinn's we'd turn into choppers and ride 10/15 miles a day thinking we were cool like my other HA Biker cousin. The SF Bay Area in the 60's was biggest show on earth :D

Okay, sorry for reminiscing and derailing some of the posts. :D

To make this even more intersting, post you first computer, first OS and what you remember going on at the time (in the world or in your "digital" life).
A little more personal glimpse into our TPU community over all?

The first I used was a Commodore 64 and Amiga (500 I believe).. Which was first, I don't recall. By the time I used them, they were already pretty old though, must've been in the mid-late 90's or so. I can't have been much older than 10 when I used them.

I remember fond memories of playing Space Hulk on the Amiga with some really great friends. Great stuff.. We also played the board game version of it :D (Warhammer 40k-based game, for those that should wonder)

Already did and it was 3.1 and I posted 100 MHz, it was actually 75 MHz with less then a gig of hard drive. I was 35 yrs old. Loved it and fell in love with computers and windows.
I should of been borned in the 80's not the 50's.

9 Years old before 1965?
The internet begins in early 1960... (the idea even start in the 50's) by 1965 they had first dial up...
Lawrence Roberts of MIT connected a Massachusetts computer with a California computer in 1965 over dial-up telephone lines. It showed the feasibility of wide area networking, but also showed that the telephone line's circuit switching was inadequate

Who was the first to use the Internet?
Charley Kline at UCLA sent the first packets on ARPANet as he tried to connect to Stanford Research Institute on Oct 29, 1969. The system crashed as he reached the G in LOGIN!

Anyhow if you want a good read---> http://www.walthowe.com/navnet/history.html

Same about Cell phone "wireless" phone the first one was invented by Nathan Stubblefield, in 1908

Use of the term "Internet" to describe a single global TCP/IP network originated in December 1974 with the publication of RFC 675, the first full specification of TCP that was written by Vinton Cerf, Yogen Dalal and Carl Sunshine, then at Stanford University.

Sorry for my vague reference.

sheesh.. wouldhave been a P2 MMX 233mhz, it started off with god-knows-what gfx card then i got a PCI Geforce 2 MX200 for it, those were the days. she came with win95 on it, but those were the days of a many a reinstall of windows, so it ended up with 98SE.

I remember around that sort of time my dad buying a 12gb hard drive and paying over $400 AUD for it... wow.

this occurs to me as being around 98-99' making me 10-11 years old. my dad always had pc's around before that age but this one was mine :D

that machine saw me through my earliest pc gaming days, with the likes of DOOM and DOOM2, Duke Nukem 3d, some roms and emulators for consoles of the time, and I got a lot into MP3's and audio editing on it...

Fist computer was a commadore VIC 20, It was old when i got it tho, I think i had it from the age of 5 as i shared it with my older brother. Games were on a huge ram cassette that you whacked in the back of it, or on tape!

The first computer i could actually use and understand a little was the Sinclair spectrum 128K +3. I spent hours on games litle Driller, shark, dan dare V/s the meekons ect. It was a very good system at it's time as well since the games were on what we would regard today as a floppy disk (it still had a plug in tape deck as well tho!!!).

First PC was a 386 running windows 3.1 was an olievetti.

First PC i owned was an athlon 700 slot A on windows 98. With a voodoo3 2000 16MB. Was a monster in it's day. I remember people comming from random parts of the university to do there math and physics based stuff on it.... I was doing no brainder degree and used it for games :D:D

it was 1992 i was 15, i had a Commodore Amiga A500. five years later in Dec 1997 i had myself a 200MHz PentII, 16Mb RAM with a Matrox Millennium graphics card. the single, most powerful PC in my circle of friends and it cost £2000 plus another £500 (because we took out extended warranty). My God PCs were expensive back then.

Sheesh ... tough crowd. It's hardware and OS related.
These threads usually produce some good discussion and a bit of nostalgia.
Yeah, I kinda vented off. I was heaving a frustrating day. I'm sorry about that.
Some ppl just type to make themselves seen lol,(...)
Yes, because I'm your typical post-whore.
