I want to build a retro rig with a socket 478 for all older games only. Since XP updates are over how safe over internet it is to put in a gaming rig? Also is there any place I could download the original Windows XP in french and rollup updates package?

Thank you!

It is 100% unsafe to put XP on the internet. But isolated, should be a pretty cool gaming PC.

Unfortunately I don't think you can do much. From a security perspective literally nothing exists on the market any longer that is reputable that can protect those systems. And none of the newer age wild infections and drive-by exploits have been patched even in a 3rd party manner.

I can only comment on the security aspect. I don't know what you should do to play online games. If your goal is too do it safely, then that's impossible. If it is still possible to play games on XP online, then maybe depending on the game. But you would be risking infecting other devices on your network, when that unit gets infected. Should you choose to not care.

What if he puts the risky XP machine on a different subnet? That way it's not really connected to the rest of his network...

If the router is configurable to support two networks and he knows how to do that. Its certainly not as simple as just changing the IP on his machine. After that then yes it would be isolated, but he would still need to routinely blow it away because of infection.

Make no mistake, XP really is that vulnerable.

An XP gaming system is fine. I use xp64 for gaming and playing around in occasionally.

If you do go online firefox esr has a final xp release and you have palemoon variants. Dont forget ublock origin plugin.

If you are talking old 16-bit windows games, OS/2 and it's incarnations will run them and has no known exploits by virtue of obscurity alone.

But it won't run 32-bit apps. And finding a copy is a pain or expensive. Plus, it is very hard to virtualize.

I would try installing Windows 10 on it. If it works well, you're golden. If it doesn't, try Windows 7. If Windows 7 doesn't work and you have to use XP, I'd limit it to offline only. XP era games generally have their multiplayer servers offline anyway (a lot were associated with GameSpy which is gone) so there's not even any point in making an XP-only game work online.

GOG is a good resource for checking if the game still has online functionality. A lot of older games will say local networking only. If you want to play with someone else over the internet in these old games, use Hamachi to create a VLAN on both ends, then play a local network game from in the game, and the game should find the other player over the VLAN.

If you determine Hamachi is what you need to do, set windows firewall to block absolutely everything and only greenlight Hamachi ports.

BTW, the problem with XP having Internet access is not really that your machine (or network) might become compromised and your data/safety put at risk. The bigger problem is there is a good chance your XP machine will be compromised, then drafted into a bad guys bot army as a zombie used to distribute spam and malware, or to participate in a DDoS attack against some legitimate site - all without bogging your system down or you being aware your system is compromised. So it is because XP systems have a good chance of becoming threats to the rest of us that they should not be connected to a network that has Internet access.

Can an XP system be secured? Sure! Today, December 22nd. But maybe not tomorrow, December 23rd.

Yeah, it's unsafe to put XP online now, as the others have described in detail.

I wanted to say that you can install Steam on it and player strictly single player games ok on it, since it will be protected by the edge firewall in your router. However, the Steam client no longer supports it, so that's out. Ok, I lie, you've got a few days left, lol. See below.

Unfortunately, there comes a point where a system becomes so obsolete and unsupported that it just can't be used at all, or only very limited ways.

Starting on January 1 2019, Steam will officially stop supporting the Windows XP and Windows Vista operating systems. This means that after that date the Steam Client will no longer run on those versions of Windows. In order to continue running Steam and any games or other products purchased through Steam, users will need to update to a more recent version of Windows.

The newest features in Steam rely on an embedded version of Google Chrome, which no longer functions on older versions of Windows. In addition, future versions of Steam will require Windows feature and security updates only present in Windows 7 and above.

For the remainder of 2018 Steam will continue to run and to launch games on Windows XP and Windows Vista, but other functionality in Steam will be somewhat limited. For example, new features such as the new Steam Chat will not be available. We encourage all users on these operating systems to upgrade to newer versions of Windows in order to have ongoing access to the latest features of Steam, and to ensure future access to all games and other Steam content.

Does Windows 10 support video acceleration in the VM mode?

If it does then a person can use a modern system and install the XP os for old gaming.

Unfortunately you cannot. RemoteFX is only supported on orignally supported VMs. You cannot apply it to new VMs even though it still shows up under add hardware.

They said a replacement was in the works in a slide, but no official date or details about the replacement project.

Another software maybe might be able to do it. But not hyper-v.

EDIT:: IIRC there used to be a work around you could force enable it via powershell, but im not sure if the method still works.

Just found this article on enabling physical GPU's in Hyper-V. Don't know how well it would work.

http://techgenix.com/enabling-physical-gpus-hyper/

yup, but thats from 2016, that more deals with the performance. RemoteFX was more about desktop experience and IIRC did not offer full integration of all DX API calls so running games on it was kinda blah and unstable.

What im talking about is that this year they legitimately retired the option all together.

That thread is going too far! I was not planning to install a CIA secured rig only play XP games. Hehehe So I will just install XP with older games that dont need to go online. :)
