I found my old XP disc and decided to dual boot.

Win7 RC1 was installed first on this new build.

Anyways, I loaded the XP disc 1, it was installing the files on a second partition, and then asked to reboot. When I rebooted, I got "unable to load windows files".

I had to insert win7 disc, fix the MBR to get windows loading again.

    What am I doing wrong?

Sounds like the Bootloader was all screwed up.

You have to add the Windows XP partition to the Windows 7 Bootloader.

Try a program called EasyBCD. Might work. I havn't done dual boot in 7 yet..

On a general rule of thumb..install older OS's first..then Newer. Your best bet..for Windows 7, is to use the Windows XP Virtual drive that's free from Microsoft.

    EDIT: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx

For the Virtual PC/XP in Windows 7.

Install oldest OS before new. And put the the OS you use the most on the 1st partition or even the most stable one..

If you have to reinstall XP after installing Vista\Win7 they will get screwed up, although i do believe there is a way to fix it.

Never had a bad XP install so never had to try fix the Vista\Win7 install.

ok, it actually says "error loading operating system".

Seems to be a driver issues? Since I'm installing XP on a sata drive?

Unless you have an unsupported Sata chip, no.

If you actually got it installed, you have a supported sata chip...

It sounds like your MBR is pointing to the wrong partition. Make sure your boot order is correct if you have multiple drives (Make sure one isn't failing, actually..), and like they said above, install on the first partition first IMO. Windows may not mark something correctly if the first 150gb is free maybe.

I had a 250 and a 500gb hdd in my system, and kept getting OS loading problems, and it turned out my 500gb drive was failing... and I was installing and running everything off of my 250gb drive. Really wierd. Took out my 500 and everything is hunky dorey.

Looks like its a known problem.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326676

Could be bios or hard drive... So installing it on a 1st partition wont help either.

    ------------------
When you restart your computer after the file-copy portion of Windows XP Setup, you may receive the following error message:

    Error loading operating system

This issue may occur if your computer BIOS does not correctly manage or support the capacity of the hard disk on which you are installing Windows XP.

FIXED! All I had to do was install win7 in a 3rd partition, and it repaired whatever it was and gave me the option to select the Desired O/S.

I then deleted the 3rd partition and and removed the 3rd entry via EZBCD.

I didn't want to reinstall win7 on the 1st partition because of all the crap I already installed.
