sorry the lads at work.
Oh, yeah, they might have been using the update media instead of updating from the store? Otherwise I'm not sure why everything would get wiped, I just know it isn't supposed to. Obviously, just like with any SP install, backup before you do it.:)

I didn't expect such debate. I thought it'd be as simple as yes or no. Thanks for the link to disable it ill have a look through when not at work.

The upgrade media I think was the issue all the work machines had.

Ill read through the links and find out if my win8 was an upgrade or not, cannot remember now and I got it through dreamspark so only have a rwdvd.

If it was an upgrade then ill stick with 8.

It doesn't matter what your original Windows 8 media was(I believe they were all Upgrades actually), what matters is how you install the Windows 8.1 Upgrade.

If you use the Windows 8.1 Upgrade Media then it wipes everything. If you get the Windows 8.1 Update through the store then it keeps all your programs, settings, and files.

Think of the Windows 8.1 Upgrade Media as the same thing as the Windows 7 w/SP1 DVDs. If you install from one of those DVDs it re-installs the whole OS, but if you just install SP1 through automatic updates then it keeps everything and just installs the service pack.

interesting when I "updated" to 8.1 nothing stayed it was like a fresh format though admittedly it gave every indication of being an "update". I was surprised and angry. That said I updated a customers PC in my shop and it went fine.

Im curious as to why more then anything.

Did you origianlly update to W8 from W7 or was it a fresh W8 install? Mine did that too (not a show stopper since I have my data on another drive) but I upgraded from W7 Ultimate to W8 so that might have been a factor.

mailman and nt, you clowns tend to come as a pair, don't you?

They come in threesomes. Everything you say is wrong.

EDIT: Seriously though, at least in the olden days of Windows Pre-8 we did backups in case of screwups. I'm pretty sure the SP installer for Windows 7 said something about backups. Backups and disk images.

My upgrade didn't go smoothly! It broke all of the permissions for my user accounts including administrator. I lost files to permissions and had to do a full format and reinstall with a 8.1 disc. That is just my experience with this crappy upgrade they put out. I even have a co worker experience the same thing with his lenovo laptop and he ended up having to call lenovo to get a restore disc after windows tried to "upgrade"
