How to use a riser card

I have a 2U riser card.

I'd expected just a card that plugs into one of the PCI slots to extend it, but this one has two cables that connect from the riser card to a small PCI card as well.

I have attempted to attach a picture.

Thing of it is, I've never used one before and need some instruction.

Not 100% sure on it, but it looks to me like the following:

You plug the PCI card into a PCI port, which gives you PCI on the PCI2 slot.
If you want PCI1 slot to work, you plug the end of that cable into another PCI slot on the mobo.
And the same with the PCI3 slot, if you want it to work you need to plug the end of the cable into the mobo.

I know that dell PCI slot riser cards plug into a special "dell" pci slot (not an ordinary PCI slot, its a little larger) which is why they get 2 new PCI slots from the one motherboard slot.

Thanks. I think I'm starting to understand.

In my case I must use PCI Slot 1 on the mobo for the riser.

So, If I want to use PCI Slots 2 & 3 on the riser, I need to plug the riser into slot 1 of the mobo and the small PCI card into slot 2 of the mobo. then move the connector riser cables to the top position. Then, PCI Slot 1 on the riser will be dead???
