Good. Get a Xigmatek (HDT) cooler though. Much better performance.

id rather go with a gtx 280 and get another down the line as there is no game it wont run, and will give you better perf later on

agreed about the xigmatek, and maybe go for a rampage extreme and a 4870x2 for a bit less cash and better stability/similar performance (also wouldnt have to worry about scaling as much as with 2 seperate cards)

there are still scaling issues with the X2 cards, i stick with my first post and vote for gtx 280 and then the option of another down the line as it is an sli board

Thanks guys, I suppose I was being a bit greedy wanting 2 cards and it would make sense to get a 280 and wait a while to get a second card; should save me some money as well!

I'll definitely consider a Xigmatek as well, thanks!

I would:

a) Wait for the new Intel stuff to come out - they are bound to make a price cut on the core duos pre or post launch

b) go for one stronger card

c) skip the Pysx card - no point seeing as a 8 series card can do it just fine.

d) get the F1 - if your not going to raid the HDD?

are you UK, Europe, USA or other based? people here can help find alternatives that produce the same amount for less.

I'm UK based. That's good advice about the new Intel stuff, I might wait a bit. I'd not considered whether I'd RAID it, I just thought that the 'raptor was pretty good for my spend.

Okay..

First off, I believe this rig is for gaming right? Then don't pay attention to the Nehalem talk, as it'll suck at games compared to the Core2's...

Get an E8500 instead.. It'll clock just as well as the E8600.. Unless you REALLY plan to push that 10x multiplier.. And you can get the 8500 to run at 8600 speed with NO knowledge of overclocking.. Just in to the BIOS and set the speed..

Pick a cheaper MOBO if you're not going for insane clocks.. I'm guessing you're not since you start out by picking a bad cooler and not-that-overclockable memory.. I'd say get the Gigabyte GA-X48t-DQ6..

If you can't get the Xigmatek cooler, get a Thermalright Ultra-120.. You won't even need a fan for that if you're not OC'ing more than a few mhz..

Good god stay away from the Velociraptors.. Yes, they'll kick ass in static benchmarks, but real life applications you won't notice the 0.2 seconds faster loadtime in a best case scenario. You'd be far happier with a large 1TB drive.. And stay away from Raid0 too, same deal here with double the risk of dataloss..

Skip the Ageia.. Newer graphicscards have build in physics acc..

Don't go SLI.. Pick a 280 or a 4870x2.. Right now I'd pick the latter..

You don't need a 1000w psu - again unless you're the overclocking type.. 750 or 850 will do you just fine.. 850 if you stay with the SLI setup..

I bet we just saved you a few dollars there...

Personally IMHO, I think it would be better to go with the GTX 280 (even it's more pricey) and the Intel Core 2 Quad 9XXX series.

And the Xigmatek HDT S1238 would do better for price and best performance (as given by Tom's Hardware).

Just remember that for a game-centric pc speed is everything, not the amount of cores.. At least not for a few years more.. And he doesn't look like the overclocking type..

Yes, speed is everything. But soon will come games that require 4 cores, so, an early upgrade might do :D Well, you're wrong! A few years more, how about Supreme Commander?

Yes, there are games that CAN take advantage of more than 1 core, but the actual performance gains in comparison to the faster clock is 0..
Games that actual require more than 2 cores are a few years away..
A lot of companies claim that "the more cores the better for our game", but when it comes to actual performance there's nothing to find.. Mhz, RAM and graphics reign king in games anyway you put it.. A Quad Core is not the way to go for a gamerpc, unless he wants to run some heavy applications in the background (photoshop heavy) and other silly stuff you shouldn't do..

and no game need 4 cores, supcom runs fine on 2. And ur making stuff up, most games minimum/recommended specs still ask for good p4's or low-mid dual cores. Games needing quads wont happen for a long while as it would alienate a VERY large segment of the market.

Well, I actually do agree that Supcom is probably THE game to bring up in this debate.. That game swallows cpu and gpu power like no other.. Dual screen and all that..

BUt it's just one game :)..I'd do a quad core for a guy too if he said "I want the worlds best Supcom pc spared no expense".. Actually I'd go Skulltrail :-D..
