My recent AMD experience has been tough, I fully switched from Intel+Nvidia to full AMD...it was a downgrade that I wanted to make. The part that I am happy about is the motherboard B450 that I got and the CPU (most of the time) had lots of issues with DRAM and I am still testing/getting used to it(currently have a kit of Patriot Viper Steel 3600mhz running at 3466 mhz with fast timings).I've replaced three motherboards by now (2xASRock B450 Steel Legend and 1xAorus X570 Elite) 2x3600X CPU's and 3 RAM kits also initially I bought the Sapphire reference 5700XT (hot and quite noisy) replaced it with the current XFX 5700XT Thicc 2 which is way better for cooling and noise (not much difference in performance) but I get BSOD's when my PC is in idle, web browsing and other very light tasks...the system is fully stable for 1h+ of AIDA64 Extreme stress testing which got me to do research over the internet and have seen others having the same issue with similar setups, this led me to believe that the AMD drivers are not mature and buggy, in the latest driver AMD specifies that windows might freeze or crash when Enhanced Sync is active. I've really wanted to give my full support as I used to be an AMD supporter but things are not quite there yet. I will keep the 3600X setup but I will replace the 5700XT with a 2070 Super (maybe Founders Edition which is the cheapest).

So yes unfortunately this is my experience, if I would not have those annoying BSOD's everything would be quite good.

P.S please don't take this as a generalisation, there are many that don't have these issues and are very happy with their AMD systems.

The hardware itself is not bad at all, the drivers are the issue imo

That’s a lot of choices! I guess by having the “don’t own this GPU” option, I can still comment. ;)

I do appreciate the thread though. I’ve been curious how this GPU has been fairing IRL. Like the above poster, I had similar issues with a Ryzen 2400G and RX 480 combo. System would do great at load, but it would usually crash and reboot itself while in sleep mode. Frustrating when the gear can handle the challenging stuff and not the simple stuff!

So far my Sapphire 5700 XT Reference has treated me flawlessly. No problems so far. I will however make 2 feedbacks:
- With Stock profile the card gets to hot and too loud for me. I could easily lower voltage by 100mv at Stock clocks which improved performance, lowered consumption by 15% and improved temps and noise a bit, BUT not enough in my opinion. Still hitting over 90C on RAM-modules etc. Underclocking to 1900@1000mv gave same performance as stock with 25% lower powerdra at acceptable temps but still a bit noisy.
- With undervolt\mod fancurve via Afterburner as it sticks on boot and does not reset. Did not like the Stock temps and my display is 75Hz max so I run With framelock and undervolt and underclock it from Stock@1200mv to 1605@850mv. Consumption is down from 175W card avg to 90W under testing in Unigine heaven and SOTTR without framecap (performance is about 12% lower than Stock, but with framecap no games ever come close to going below 60fps at 1080p\ultra), with framcap it is typically consuming 60-80W in Metro Exodus and fan never goes above 35% which is very acceptable. Temps hover around 60-70C on all Components With my current fan-profile. Radeon image sharpening is really good and works good in both SOTTR (seems better with last driver) and Metro Exodus. Very satisfied.

If you plan on running Stock or OC go AIB or watercooled, don`t buy Stock XT, too hot and loud in my opinion. If you plan to undervolt and underclock and mod fancurve going Reference-style can be extremely good value. Especially where I live were cheapest AIB-models costs 40USD more than Reference.

The XFX Thicc has more than just driver issues.
It has bios issues with the fan not starting even in games. Which leads to the card hitting 100C Edge temp (the TJunction will be well beyond 110C).
Direct quote from Hardware Unboxed:
Update: I got some new info from XFX today (after the video was completed and uploaded), so I haven’t had time to confirm it yet.
Firstly they claim the ‘silent mode’ works, but you have to re-install Radeon display driver for it to recognize the BIOS change, seems odd and this wasn’t an issue with the Evoke or Red Devil.
But XFX says this is a known AMD driver bug and AMD’s still working on the fix.
Secondly they say the fan-stop issue where the GPU hits 100c is a BIOS problem (which we already knew) and they have sent a new BIOS version which they say spins the fans up when the temperature reaches 60-70c.
I will be testing the XFX 5700 in the next few days, so I’ll update the BIOS for both models and report my findings in that review.
That is all for now, hope you enjoyed the review and remember, gotta buy dat merch!

Stupid question: now that CFX / SLI are not "a thing" anymore, what's to stop GFX manufacturers from using standard fans (92mm or even 120mm) with normal height (25mm) with the correspondent normal fan connectors so that, should users desire to switch fans, they don't have to get the exact same fan and can use ... say ... GT, Noctua, whatever other brand? Shouldn't the height of the fans alone help improve thermals? Typical GPU fans are up to 15mm thick while normal fans are 25mm: @ the same speed, normal fans should cool much better so i don't see why such a move from manufacturers hasn't been done.

As for the topic, i'm not gonna be buying RX 5700 generation cards: too much power consumption and i don't game enough to really justify such a purchase. Perhaps a possible RX 5600 generation cards would be more enticing but that really depends on it's performance VS my current card because if the performance is similar, there won't be much of a point either.

Try disabling hardware acceleration for Chrome and see if those crashes go away. I've heard about this in AMD subreddit numerous times.

The card has already been returned. If I can not find a decent priced 2070 super then I might get the Gigabyte 5700xt or the Pulse or Red Devil... But I will probably buy the 2070 super

Good GPU cooling solutions are heavily optimized and hard to beat.
Fans are designed to work well with the particular radiator (size, pressure, flow). And they often spin the opposite way to improve airflow.

I think we often forget how great these coolers are (compared to the more generic stuff we get for CPUs).
At every TDP a good GPU cooler will deliver lower noise or better temperatures.
From TPU reviews:
MSI Gaming 2070 Super : 2x 95mm fans, ~200W, 71*C, 31dB
MSI 2080Ti Lightning Z: 3x 95mm fans, ~300W, 74*C, 36 dB

A high-quality 2x 120mm cooler (Noctua U12A) will give you around 75*C and 35dB on a 150W CPU. :)
Noctua D15 with 3 fans is able to cover 300W... but we're now taking about 140mm+.

If anything, I'd rather see the exact opposite of what you asked.
I'd love to see more "all-in-one" air coolers, with fans and heatsink being developed together - even if it means sacrificing compatibility with 3rd party fans.

But, with everything else being equal, if you stick a couple of fans ... say ... 10mm thicker than the stock fans, you should have lower temps due to the fans moving more air @ the same speed, which in turn equal higher boost and / or longer periods with the same boost which means more performance or, alternatively, have lower fan speed for the same performance, with the same thermals but lower noise levels.

Or is my reasoning flawed?

If the AIB does that - sure - a thicker fan should push more air at the same rpm. And there should be no drawbacks (apart from the thickness, obviously).

If you replace the fans yourself... it depepends what you expect (or what you can tolerate).
By using fans that give more airflow at the same pressure, you should get lower temperatures - absolutely true.
However:
1) The plastic shroud likely has some role in directing the airflow, so you're loosing that effect (unless you make a new one).
2) Some features may not work because of different fan characteristics - e.g. fan stopping in idle and dust cleaning (reverse spin during boot).
3) New fans may use more power, so will the card deliver? And if you power them directly from the PSU, you lose a lot of functionality.
4) What about noise? Factory coolers are designed to minimize noise. With aftermarket fans it's a lottery.
Keep in mind that both airflow and vibration noise vary between heatsinks (which is one of the reasons why fan reviews are so inconsistent).

Of course aftermarket heatsinks exist. Some even try to adapt CPU coolers. :)
But is it a solution for the mainstream? Should all cards come with a bare heatsink or nothing? I really doubt that.

As I say all the time: purpose built cooling (like in OEM workstations) is the gold standard. We're already sacrificing a lot to make PCs customizable and DIY-friendly.
If GPUs managed to remain whole for so long, it clearly works.

Valid points you bring up but i was thinking more along the lines of the card's shroud being already prepared for the thickness of normal fans, with normal fan connectors (instead of the smaller current ones): should the user decide to use different fans (RGB ones, premium ones, etc) all the user would have to do would be open the shroud, remove the old fans, install their replacements and put back the shroud, with no need to disassemble the rest of the card.

This would mean the card would already be thicker than most current cards from the get go and i'd expect something like "should the user change the stock fans on the card for other than stock fans, user loses warranty" from the manufacturers.

Since this is off topic, i'll be happy to continue to discuss it with you via conversation, should you so wish: apologies to OP for derailing the topic.

Classic AMD. It's called FineWine :D
I think Navi is a great architecture and when it matures along with the drivers it will be extremely good

That's what I've heard about Bulldozer :p
Joking aside, I'm not usually an early adopter, I'll wait for it to mature first.

When Turing came out with RTX all the RED fans are calling it gimmick.

When Navi came out the RED fans: "This is fine, THIS IS FINE WINE, give it time to grow and mature"

mental gymnastics are amusing

It's bad. Every driver after 19.7.5 is a fountainhead of BSODs. Crashes in the middle of work. Something as normal as switching tabs in Firefox or loading YouTube can cause a nasty BSOD. Most monitoring tools that poll I2c cause memory or IRQ related BSODs. Also AMD did a nasty bait-and-switch between its initial drivers and 19.7.4, by raising minimum fan speeds on the reference card.

When it works, it's really fast. But it's not safe for PCs that put food on the table. Take it from someone with two such PCs.

19.9.2 fixed 90% of my BSODs. Very optimistic now.

Holy hell I thought it was bad but did not expect it to be this nasty.

Between the RyZen 3000 boost false advertising and this “bait and switch” you are mentioning here i’m kinda grossed out. Playing the victim underdog while actively playing dirty is shady AF.

Does TPU plan to uncover this bait and switch sometime? I have a feeling there will be a mountain of angry AMD fan mobs with their pitchforks attacking anyone who open up this can of “Navi bait and switch” worm

I've talked about this in 3 separate newsposts and reached out to AMD higherups. Pin drop silence. Gave up.

I'll put up with this card for maybe 2 more driver updates. And then I'll cast it aside for a 2060S.
