hp dv6, dead cpu or board?

I bought the thing for $60 bucks, and im trying to fix it. When i turn it on, it only turns on for a second and turns off. I tried the regular trick of overheating the gpu with a heatgun but still no luck. Though i figure its not the gpu since other hps i had with gpu problem would turn on and blink caps lock or something.. what you guys think?

My inexperienced mind is asking if it could be a short somewhere. Maybe?

well i got the laptop stripped to bare minimum. only power jack, power button and lcd. still the same problem

full model is dv5-1125nr by the way.

Remove AC adaptor, remove battery, hold power button for 60 seconds then release. Replace battery, connect adaptor, try turning it on.

Second option. Try removing the hard drive and performing the above steps a second time.

like i mentioned in my previous post, all i have on my desk right now is just the motherboard, power jack, power button and LCD. all other accesories are disconnected including RAM, Hard drive, usbs ect.

tried it without processor as well, and same result. turns on for a split second and turns off.

Did you hold the power button 60sec like I mentioned? If that doesn't work, and you've tested everything else, it's a dead board

Usually would just declare an error if it'c RAM,CPU or GPU. Can you test the charge on the laptop battery? Maybe bad power jack. Smell the power jack and see if it smells funny. There could be a chance it went bad.

Power jack seems fine, the led stays solid as it tries to turn on. charger is fine, because i tried two other ones which i use regularly. i tried the 60 second holding of the power button. do you think it might be the gpu? should i get it reballed?

The DV6s have many problems. If it was a DV2000,6000, or 9000 I'd suggest simply reflowing it. 9/10 that's all they need. The dv6 on the other hand doesn't respond as well to reflows. Is there something about that laptop that makes it worth the effort to you? Reballing isn't exactly cheap unless you know a friend who's doing it.

not really anything about it i need to keep. I do have a friend that does reflows. He can probably do it for $40 or so. I did buy the thing for $60 anyway, so it might be worth a try. thanks for all your input everyone

Meh I hate those things even with reflow there still hit and miss I usually just outright tell people its a defective design and not to waste there money trying to fix it.
Which is the reason i have like 3 1/2 of them sitting around in parts boxes.

Power on and right off is either ram, cpu, bent pins or motherboard failure. Try powering the board on with nothing in it then re inset the cpu and ram if it still turns off immediately the toss it.
There are a few places out there that will send you a tested working reflowed board at a discount if you send your busted one in, still not worth the money IMO.

yeah i tried all kinds of combinations and no luck. its an odd problem, because i did several dv3,4,6 that had gpu problems but those at least turned on and flashed the caps and numlock. so i knew right away what the issue is but this one is a first. at least i got a good hard drive, ram, and a screen that will go on ebay =)
