The HP P700 is the fastest portable SSD we've ever tested. Under the hood, the P700 uses an SMI SM2263 controller, Micron 3D TLC, and DRAM cache, which is rare on portable SSDs. With $175 for the reviewed 1 TB version, pricing is reasonable, too.

That extra large housing seems weird. Maybe they use the same housing for multiple devices? It's the only thing that makes sense, but hey...

Marketing, most people see a drive that is smaller than the competition and think they skimped somewhere and it must not be as good.

I guess people need to have their heads examined then, as I want something as pocket friendly as possible.

Uncertain what this means. Is it: "1 TB SSD typically uses 1 TB of DRAM ... " ?

I have three USB-3 ports on my Dell XPS 15 (2013 model). So the USB hardware port is the limit. The external SSD seems to not matter, because the speeds cannot be greater than the slowest link in the chain.

No, it's one gigabyte of dram cache (chip) per one terabyte of nand flash capacity
