I've got a cpu/mobo/ram combo which I took out of my brother's pc to upgrade it. Don't remember mobo model but the cpu is a Sempron single core 2Ghz :ohwell: is a single core sufficient for htpc?, and there is 1GB ram (which I can increase). The mobo's got a pci-e slot in which I can insert the 8600GTS I have.
I also have some 400W generic PSU which I can use, and several hdd's lying spare as well...

If the above parts are ok for an HTPC, all I'd need to purchase would be a blu ray player and a small neat black case to put everything inside - so while on the topic which HTPC case would you suggest? The smaller the better. Is a single core sempron 2Ghz sufficient? And an 8600GTS 256MB?

Is it the AM3 Sempron or the older AM2? If its the newer AM3 45nm sempron then i say yes, it should be fine but older 65nm or 90nm chips would not be great for it as a HTPC, if you can afford it i say get a X2 chip.

I have Athlon XP 3200 with 1GB RAM and GeForce 6200 in my full passive cooled HTPC. It's sufficient for Blue Ray and 1080i MKV files. I use ElementOS as an operating system on it.

2gig just for multimedia i guess thats enough, but personally i prefer 2.5gig up and it combined with nice graphic card, for all around i guess 8600gts will be enough
