I honestly don't see it happening, it is too expensive to fly normally and the number of people who can and will pay as much for tickets is small. Then there is the issue of sonic booms which is still there which means only over ocean or desert can they fly properly fast

It didn't stop the Concord. If this is successful, expect it to be used by the filthy rich for mostly business meetings, just like the Concord was used.

At face value, this is BS:
The mission of this aerospace startup is to increase the speed of air transportation by developing vehicles that can fly ''in excess of Mach 5 — over 3,000 miles per hour [4,800 km/h]. At Mach 5, flight times from New York to London will be reduced from 7 hours to 90 minutes,'' Hermeus officials said in the statement. Mach 1 is approximately the speed of sound traveling through Earth's atmosphere.
Yes. If you teleported to the edge of the atmosphere and were instantly accelerated to Mach 5, this would be true, but that breaks physics. You can't go anywhere near hypersonic in a large cross section vessel until you reach very high altitude where the air is thin enough to not be a virtual wall. Then your engine has to chew through a lot of that thin air to accelerate up to Mach 5 only to have to bleed off from that velocity and altitude down to a landing. New York to London is only practical as a supersonic aircraft (like the Concorde). Hypersonic is more suitable to crossing the Pacific where you have a lot of space and time to accelerate/raise and deaccelerate/lower.

I would also caution that the military has only dabbled in such things and never with a human on board. If the multibillion dollar US DoD budget hasn't made it a viable option without people, what are the odds of a tiny startup doing it with people? None?

So much fail.

So much fail.

Imagine the amount of energy ie fuel needed for that kind of rubbish. Also the temperatures... the MIG-25 could fly past mach 3, but... for few minutes as the tank become empty and the engines melted. The SR-71 was designed to fly past mach 3.2, with highly toxic fuel, and leaking on the ground, as things expand as fuselage reaches over 260C while flying. I tend to believe we have nothing new in that department that would change this BS Mach 5. Titanium alloys is still best we have.

Whoa , i am not givin those guys a dime but flight itself is relatively new achiewment for humans maybe they have uncle in area 51 who have acces to some good s%;t :D

The friction introduced by any substrate we use today whether titanium or some alloy mixture would not be able to withstand the heat generated by going that fast in any consumer application in fact if I remember the X-15 went Mach 6 but that was as experimental as they came. There would also be no abrupt course changes during flight. There is also the issue of noise. Some people have referenced the Concorde and that only flew at Mach 2. Mach 5 is 3800+ MPH so as someone suggested only Trans Pacific flights make sense. The cost of fuel and the use of the same would definitely keep this out of mainstream access.

USA has tested aircraft capable of Mach 25 using ramjets. In theory it is possible but in practice, there will be a military bomber before a passenger aircraft.
