Under my instruction an 8 year old girl built a PC.

Pete has been a mate of mine since we were 11, we were in senior school together and have been the best of pals since.

Last Xmas his youngest daughter really wanted a PC so she could play Minecraft and start to do a bit of youtubeing, skype and stuff. So, they came to me for advice.

my idea was that if the girl built the pc she could have it.... if it just sparked a bit of interest it would be great and a fantastic confidence boost.

She is a very bright child....her mother is a Headteacher (and the kids dont follow their Dad thats for sure. ) Shes a sensible kid and knows how dangerous electricity can be.

Anyway.

Last Xmas came and went and we werent able to coordinate a visit to build the computer so the little girl ended up with a massive tub of Nutella as a pressie rather than a PC.

Cut to yesterday.

A phone call from Pete.

"Ger we are on the way to build the PC, I'll bring cakes have you got coffee.?"

Its a 2.5 hour drive from their house to here so in that time i took the PC apart ready for her to put back together . I had built it ready months previously, installed her game and all the necessary safety software so i knew it was all working correctly.

When they arrived i had all the constituent parts laid out on a table and as soon as she walked in i gave her a screwdriver. When i showed her everything her eyes lit up.....she was amazed and obviously understood most of what i was talking about.......she was asking questions..:peace:

We spoke about the motherboard and how it connect to the case. What the different parts of the motherboard do and how they receive electricity. How the different components speak to each other and what they do. Then she went on to build the PC....she placed every screw...every cable and connector and even with my tutorial it was done in 1.5 hours.

Then came the nerve wracking bit......turning it on.

I was desperate for it to work, honestly, really desperate because the MotoGP race was starting and i wanted them to bugger off so i could watch it in peace.

Sooooooooooo.

Sweet little 8 year old girl presses the switch and

Nothing.

I, with an exaggerated look of horror said to her " oh no....youve broken it"

Then I flipped the switch on the PSU for her and BINGO (of course....:)..) it worked. She is absolutely delighted, as is her Dad and i think her Mum will be happy too. She logged in to Minecraft and "tested" her new machine.

I forgot to tell her i did this with it......:D

http://hwbot.org/submission/3112327_capslockstuck_cinebench___r15_phenom_ii_x2_550_198_cb/

I didnt overclock it for her build but i matched it with a Radeon HD 6970 and 4 gb ram, 500gb hdd.

i have built pcs with my own kids when they were little, they have grown up surrounded with them so it was a real treat for me to see such joy and excitement from the little girl but not only that.......she was obviously interested in what we were doing.

When they left i watched the bike racing.... Cal Crutchlow (GB) was first ........... brilliant.:clap::clap:

Just wanted to share, thats all......:)

p.s

Pete bought a load of copper off me so now i have 40 quid for a new cooler....:D

Sounds like the time I taught my mate to build a P.C.

Now he's working for a top level I.S.P. in our home city while I'm still digging holes.

Good story mate :)

Cheers.

That is so cool, this is the best way to spark a kid's interest for PC's. Great job mate!!!! I remember how all this IT "madness" started for me when I was 14. My sister gave me her laptop (Pentium III 500mhz,64MB of RAM SDR, S3 Savage 8MB and a 10GB HDD) it had windows ME on it and then XP came out. I had a neighbor that was an IT passionate and I went to him to get the windows XP installed on the laptop. First I had to upgrade my RAM mem so I bought an 128MB SDR stick, the guy took the time to show me how to install the RAM and every step of how to set up the OS (XP) and that was the spark for me and from then on little by little I've started to develop my passion for the industry. :)

Have you tried unlocking the extra 2 cores on that 550? That plus stress-testing them to see if they're stable (if you are able to unlock them which quite a lot of 550's could) would definitely help her to catch the PC bug.

Thats why i originally bought the chip. I had success with other AMD cpus but even with BIOS flashes i couldnt find or activate the cores. I only paid £ 9.99 for it.

Getting it to run at 3.8ghz is quite a significant boost from 3.1ghz ........the best o/c i ever got on that platform actually.

the upgrade path for it would be something along the lines of

1. SSD
2. 4 core Phenom
3 4 more gbs ram

all doable for about 80 quid.

I downloaded a trial of Minecraft so i could test it. I honestly thought there was something wrong with the computer but apparently its supposed to look like that.

I didnt check the FPS.

Yeah, I couldn't play Minecraft but it's a great game for kids. Lets them use their imagination. Kind of like Lego blocks when we were kids.

Her folks are happy for her to play it but were concerned that she was using a small screen. She has been promised a 24 " screen and i gave her a 19" to be getting on with.....i explained she can use both. One for Minecraft
(and the other for all her monitoring tools....:))

The whole thing has worked out really well, i bought the HD6970 off a friend @Luke Whitton who was then able to get GTX 970. I have also been able to clear out some of my inventory which is a good thing with winter approaching as i need to go back in my warm corner of the kitchen.

i only have 4 pcs here now though i am hoping to get an X58 board back from repair next week and start another Xeon build.

I went through something similar with one of my grandkids - though he was turning 10. He too wanted his own computer for Minecraft.

It was a great learning experience for me as much as it was for him. I think there is no better way to learn than to teach!

I know for a fact - and it is a totally selfish observation and experience - one thing that keeps me going (here on forums and when teaching kids and seniors how to have a good and safe computing experience) is the "warm fuzzy" I get when you almost see the "click" when they "get it" and their faces light up. That just makes my day, as it sounds like it made yours. :)

He's always been into tinkering with things - though mostly taking things apart. So putting something together was a bit different. We spent a lot of time on safety (anything that plugs into the wall can kill), ESD precautions, and especially "practicing safe computing" - that is, developing the discipline of keeping the bad guys away by (1) keeping Windows and apps (especially security apps) updated, (2) using a decent anti-malware solution (scanners and firewall), and most of all, avoiding being "click-happy" on unsolicited downloads, attachments, popups, and links. There was a lot of emphasis on the fact the user is always the weakest link in security.

I was afraid he was going to get bogged down with all the colloquialisms and terms, but he ate it all up. At first, he wanted to be a technician like his grandpa but now talks about being a "white hat" tech building machines to stop the bad guys - and work with "Abby" on NCIS! :D

Anyway, thanks for sharing this, CAPSLOCKON. I hope she sticks with it. Sounds like a good kid. Having worked in this industry for over 45 years, I can attest to the fact that women in IT have great opportunities. There's still the "good ol' boy" issues on the business side she will have to deal with, but on the technical sides (in programming too), there's no glass ceiling she'll have to break through.
Do you think 8 is the perfect age or do you think somebody even younger would have enjoyed the process?
I think at that age, it is a case by case process. Most kids want immediate results. Teaching how to build a computer while building a computer takes time and attention spans at that age can be pretty short. This can really be a problem once the computer is built and you then have to load the OS and setup security before even thinking of installing the programs/games.

They are all different......like i said my own kids (17 and 15) have grown up with pcs and they helped when they were pretty small. Sparking an interest is the thing.

I know one thing......the delight would be the same whether you are 8 or 88

My boys are still too young so it will be a few years but they are close in age. I think I will wait until the youngest is ready and will gather them both up and instruct them together on building their own rig. It will bring a tear to my eye. It sounds like for maximum effect I should preload the OS and all necessary security tools. God, having them on the internet is going to be very scary. I think I will need something like a Raspberry Pi-Hole on my network for piece of mine

Start slow. I first lit that flame when my grandson was about 5 and I told him I needed his help securing a graphics card. I needed him to make sure the mounting screw was in tight. So I taught him "righty tighty, lefty loosey". Of course we were still working on remembering right from left, but when he got it tight - well, sort of snug - and I told him "good job!", he got real excited. I thought I could get him to help more but he was so excited he "built a computer for Grandpa" that he ran off to tell Grandma and then was distracted by something else and didn't come back! :) Oh well.

BTW, the great thing about grandkids is you get to spoil them rotten, then hand them back at the end of the day! :D

You done a great thing there for a small child, Caps. :toast: Nothing like seeing the delight on a child's face and that sense of achievement you've given her. This might well spark an interest in the IT industry when she grows up, too. We have ladies working in IT where I work, which is great to see.

You've also brightened up what's been a miserable Monday for me, off sick from work.

I'm curious which version of Windows did you install on it, btw?

Also, Minecraft has a fairly light graphics load so should run smoothly on that rig which will make her happy. Now, just wait for that dreaded phone call to Uncle Ger when she tries to run some modern, more demanding games on it and the frame rate tanks or won't run at all... ;)

Sweet little 8 year old girl presses the switch and

Nothing.

You ***hole! I can only imagine the look on her face. I bet she'll tell you years from now that she thought she'd really broken something. She'll have a flash of horror every time she presses the power button. (youngest child who had this kind of s....tuff pulled on me all the time)
