I was thinking to go water, but honestly my card games stock...there isnt really a need to clock it aside from F@H;) (oh and benches of course)
A waste of cash imo. I water my GTX260, and did not improve clocks. Same yield with stock cooler on open bench/good air flow. Sure, it does not go above 50 on furmark burn, still is a waste of effort for no perf gains..

It's in my system now and I can confirm that a 285 gtx and 280 gtx are really on par with each other and if you have good air flow in your system there is zero reason to buy a 285 gtx over a 280 gtx. Unless you don't overclock the card. If you max overclock both cards you might see just a few frame difference if that. That after a certain point overclocking the core on the 200 gpus and shaders doesn't give you much return in real world performance. I have owned 2 x 285 gtxs and 4 x280 gtxs and realize just how good these cards are.
Well.. yeah. GTX 285 is a GTX 280 only with 55nm fab, and a higher factory clock. Pump the GTX 280's clock rates to a 285's and thats it. 285 for a mere 280's price. Only difference is the higher OC yield on the 285, in which what you will be paying for.

I agree, water is a waste of cash. I have the stock cooler on my regular eVGA GTX280 and i reach 754c 1509s and 1337m (I can go higher on mem but i like 1337). Even stock with a 720be i max any game out there. These really are little beasts and are imo the next 8800GTX.

Thanks guy for that patch. Now i dont have to worry about getting just eVGA cards.

BTW those clocks are without voltage tuner.

this card has zero trouble reaching 285 gtx speeds even with the ram, which in several other cases I couldn't break 2400

Bjorn and PP....

If your card ran in the mid 80's with a stock cooler, and adding volts helps increase core/shaders, but the addition brings the card to 95*C with 100% fan. Is it wort it then....I think she still has some love to give, but I dont want to try too much more due to those temps?

Was thinking of throwing a accelero extreme and some heat sinks on the VRMS but 1. it doesn't need it even at stock it destroys everything and 2. at the price it adds to the card you could buy a higher card making this not a deal anymore. Might end up selling it fantastic card best 280 gtx I've had.

Im thinking now to just push it as is to see where she ends up. 700 core is fine and 24/7 w/o voltage. with a slight bump I was able to go to 720. I want to give it more juice!!!

hmm.. then I'd sell the card and score a 5870 if I was that desperate for a perf boost. No amount of 285 OC can outperform it a 5870 on OC as well I guess. 285 block costs a lot as well. Sell the 285 and add the amount you would spend for the block.

Youd get a faster card and dx11 support to boot as well..

dont take my word for it though.. its his moneyz ^^

Doesn't rivatuner have a gpu voltage option as well?

Just tinkering really, wasnt trying to beat anything out, just think Id like to hammer on her a bit with some voltage is all;)

Yes it does, but the "open" version of the EVGA tool works out of the box for voltage.

mid to high 80's as long as I dont add voltage. Once I do that and tinker a bit I was in the mid 90's pretty fast.

never reapplied the tim on this one, as with my 275 it made little difference...plus its XFX I got double lifetime on her. If she pops I'll rma it. Talked with the guys at XFX, and they say I could pop the sticker for the holes, but he even told me it has a warranty for a reason, dont bother if you dont need to. So if she pops she pops, Im not too worried;)

Your allowed to change the heat sink on xfx without voiding the warranty and I change the thermal paste with zero effect.

I know but I saw a thread here where a kid mangled his sticker (wasnt allowed to RMA), so I wanted the answer straight from XFX. They told me as long as I made neat holes to remove the screws they would honor the warranty. If I mangled the sticker it isnt covered.
