I just sent in this support ticket to ATi:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have owned 9 ATi video cards (all Sapphire) so far. Everyone has been an excellent card. The only thing the cards have been missing is gpu fan control in the drivers. ATi you need to include fan control in the CCC drivers. You include Overdrive in the drivers but I can't even run it as my HD 3850 fan never speeds up and the temp. climbs to 94*C and then the computer locks up. I was lucky to find the second party program. Riva Tuner to give me some basic fan control for my card. I can actually play games now with my new HD 3850 thanks to Riva Tuner. I have used another second party program, ATi Tool for fan control on my X800/X850 series cards. With out the fan control of these second party programs I would not be able to play any 3D games with my ATi hardware as the gpu is guaranteed to overheat and crash out in one way or another. I had a nVidia card not to long ago and I remember their drivers having a fan control option. People spend their hard earned money on the ATi cards, we should not have to spend more money on aftermarket coolers just to use our cards, when all that is needed is to have fan control include in the CCC driver panel.

I know it is possible for ATi to include gpu fan control in the drivers, nVidia does it. PLEASE give us gpu fan control in the CCC drivers from hear on out.

PLEASE!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I imagine they have heard this request before, but ATi needs to give us gpu fan control. ATi Tool saved my X800/X850 cards butt's and Riva Tuner has saved my 3850's butt. Thank you W1zzard and Alexey for your excellent hard work! :respect: Lets hope ATi gives us gpu fan control. I imagine there are people that don't know about ATi Tool and Riva Tuner. Those people (and us lazy people) need stock fan control to keep their ATi card alive and usable.

If you also feel ATi needs to include gpu fan control in their drivers Please send them a request.

I've seen my 3850 climb as high as 89 degrees. My heart always goes aflutter when I look at that temperature gauge, but it's undeniably stable. My real concern is that without a boost to its cooling the GPU's temperature will climb even higher during the summer months.

If that happens I suppose I can resort to RivaTuner or ATITool for fan control, but it'd be so much more convenient for it to be integrated into the driver.

ati think 90 C is okay.. its not hot to them its intentional graogrim so wherever your heart goes it dosnt have to..

your request is good.. fan control would be usefull but ati do not guarantee your card will run overclocked.. once u hit that unlock button the bets are off..

ati will say u are overclocking the card thats why it dosnt run not because its too hot.. the stock fan will run at whatever speed it has to to maintain 90 C..

ati will say u already have fan control its automatic.. and they would be right.. it is..

so even thow your request for (user) fan control is good your argument for getting it is poor.. sorry..

but the more that ask for user control the more likley ati are to give it.. so writing to them was a good idea..

trog

ps.. the way it works is this.. ati have set 90 C as a target temp.. the fan dosnt even bother speeding up till it gets near 90 C.. it then runs at whatever speed it has to trying to maintain that 90 C.. mine was around 40%.. it has plenty in reserve if the weather gets warmer the card will run the same temps winter or summer.. its cleverer than u think..

^Both, technically. If it were me I would just get a copy of the cards BIOS, edit it so the fan spins @ 100% all the time and reflash with the modded fan speeds.

I tried the .26 ATi Tool and all of the .27 betas. They did not work for me with my 3850. I can't understand ATi shooting for a 90*C threshold, that is so frickin' stupid imo. I could not even play games with my X850XT with it's stock cooler without ATi tool. That frickin' fan was set at like 5% and my system would crash out shortly after starting a game. The stock settings on the X850XT in reality made it an expensive door stop as it was guaranteed to overheat and crash if you used it for what you bought it for, gaming. Running Overdrive on my 3850 then should not let my (our) card(s) get over 90*C. The fan needs to kick in at or before 90*C and start cooling. Even if it needs to go straight to 100% fan usage, but it simply does not. If it is the quiet factor they are shooting for that doesn't make sense to me neiter. I can't even hear the fan at 50% or lower, and I am sure at stock settings it will never even near 50% (or more) usage. I don't want to have to mod it to run my fan at 100%, that is way to loud for normal usage.

It has been awhile since I had my last nVidia card, a 7900GS, but I do remember some sort of fan control in the nTune panel. I put a VF700 on it so I never used the fan control so I can't recall how effective it's settings were, but there was some option there. I just feel Ati/AMD needs to put some fan controls in the CCC for us users. You need to be able to game with your gaming card and not have to run into over heating and system crashing.

Yes Nvidia has a fan control My gts 512 will run 72c at idle if I dont turn it up but at 85% Overclocked it never gets over 42c even after sevral hours of UT3 fragging. So yes ATI needs to stepup to the plate.

rivatuner will set a fixed fan speed.. i find atitool to be unreliable with my 3870..

ati have decided 90 C is okay.. it was okay for my 1900xtx.. my 1900xtx was noisy at 90 C my 3870 is silent at 90 C..

100% is only for those that like the sound of leaf blowers.. many complaints have been made by joe soap users about noisy fans over the years.. ati have chosen silent running at 90 C..

its a choice for normal users who simply play games and dont become obsessive about the temperature their hardware runs at.. the vast majority of users fit this bill..

gld.. if your card wont run properly as it came set up by ati there is something wrong with it.. its faulty.. send it back..

other obsessives can simply flash their card with this bios.. be prepared for a little more noise thow..

use at own risk..

trog

ps.. how the stock fan speed works.. depends whats running.. the fur bench thing heats thing up more.. the fan runs 40% and the temps are just over 90 C.. games are more like the pic..

one thing must be made clear here.. your card is guaranteed to run at the settings it came with.. not at whatever settings u choose to set overdrive at..

I had a problem with Riva tuner when i owned a HD 3870, i used to put the fan speed around 75% but somehow it got screwed up and randomly would put the fan speed down to 25% causing my HD 3870 to overheat and VPU recover to bring it back to life. not wanting to kill the card or RMA it i just took it back, these fan control i think for both need some fixing, by far Ntune is the worst as it doesnt save your Fanspeed at all

Your message really needs some clearing up i cant understand at all what your saying?

Right now ATI tool works maybe its not the best, but it works and i think thats what The OP needs to know. Maybe ATI will add Fan speeds who knows? they did overdrive and when using it on the HD 3870 it was fine i perfer ATI-Tool or RivaTuner but its all the same anyhow.

What we really need a is a Bio flashing tool for ATI cards much like Nvbitor, that way clockspeeds and fanspeeds are saved in the Bios and no need for 3rd party tools

Well i am with GLD with this one. They should add options for fan control for the user i don't want my GPU hitting 90+ in fact with the new 7.12's i get system crash if i don't use ATI Tool.

Some times it feels like ATI's fan control is lax as if the GPU hits 90c ish system crashes ( fan don't even make a effort to cool ) now with ATI Tool it gets to at least 98c then crashes.

Kinda getting sick of this silence crap as my old PSU had it too so it overheated instead of being cooled correctly.

I just took the stock cooler off my 3850 an slapped my trusty old vf900 on it.The stock fan on my 3850 never seemed to spin up at all,it kept doing the vpu recover thing. Its fine now tho',even with the fan on the vf900 plugged into my board at 100% all the time,i still cant hear it.

back when i first got my 1900xtx i thought jeesh this thing is hot.. 90 C what the hell.. but short of water cooling it there wasnt much to be done about it.. but nowhere have i ever heard of a 1900xtx dieing thru that 90 C so it must be okay..

intel P4 prescots cpus ran at 100 C.. again never have i heard of one dieing thru it..

many passive card have come on the maket running 90 C and over.. they dont die from it..

however.. if your ati card wont run as its comes set up by ati. its faulty.. mine runs perfectly at 90 C just like my 1900xtx did.. perfectly overclocked not just at stock..

now the bottom line.. if a card is clocked up near its instability point running at say 70 C as opposed to 90 C might just make it stable.. its probably good for an extra 5 to 10 mhz core speed..

now if ati are selling cards at stock clocks that close to the edge of stability they need to be sent back..

both my 3870 cards run perfectly stable at 90 C all day long clocked at 830/1230..

sorry i dont have a faster fan bios for the 3850 GLD.. but the one i posted for the 870 both unlocks the 862 blackscreen on early cards and runs the fan well faster..

try this place GLD.. look for gecube or HIS turbo bios.. thye might run the fan faster

What we really need a is a Bio flashing tool for ATI cards much like Nvbitor, that way clockspeeds and fanspeeds are saved in the Bios and no need for 3rd party tools

well having owned a couple of 3870 cards longer than anybody else and messed with them more than most.. i can say atitool crashes my 3870 card with reasonable certainty.. or at least it crashes it at speeds it dosnt crash at without atitool.. sooo if u are having instabilty problems with your card i would strongly suggest u dont use atitool..

if u dont want to believe me thats up to u..

but when u hit the furry dice button having set speeds u know work and get an instant system crash it dont take a genius to work out why..

i strongly suspect it isnt raising the core voltage up to 3d levels properly..

Like Nvidia does any better? ATI doesn't have alot of focus on stuff like this... I would much rather prefer a more efficient driver than fanspeed control.
