I have to say this HP1010 printer is the biggest rip off and worst implemented piece of hardware I've come across in my life. Hewlett Packard seem to have only two objectives- to make you buy overpriced cartridges and to sign you and the printer up to the internet of things.

As an occaisional printer user I'm royally screwed. The cartridges clog between uses every time so I spend hours attempting to unclog them, fail, go and buy more cartridges then spend more time navigating HP's idiotic software to set up the new cartridges.

No, I do not want to recieve notifications when the cartridges run low. They never do run low because they always clog first.

No, I do not want to sign up to HP's protected cartridge scheme. HP's cartridges are the worst I've ever come across, I want protection from HP.

No, I do not want to give HP access to any information about my system and I do not want HP's badly written software to run in the background on startup.

I think the only cost and time effective solution is to smash it into small pieces and do all my printing at an internet cafe or library.

And while I'm on the subject, who in this day and age needs a hard copy of a document which needs to be digitised anyway to be printed? Why won't they let me just email the PDF?

/end rant

I use either laser printers or Brother ink printers.

Cheap 3rd party ink cartridges are available on Ebay for like 10 bucks for 5 pack. Never clogs so far in years of usage.

Laser printers with high capacity toner lasts many months if not years for home use.

I kept getting annoyed at inkjet printers, and the problem is that if you don't use them frequently then the water in the ink evaporates, leaving thicker ink behind that clogs the jets. I moved to a laser colour printer, which although costs more upfront doesn't have this issue - the ink (which is actually a powder that gets melted onto the paper) doesn't run out if I'm not using it, and it can't clog or anything like that. At around 6,000 pages per ink cartridge I'll likely never need to buy another one.

For people who have issues with inkjets I always suggest moving to laser as they are fine not being used for 6 months. Plus laserjet printed stuff is waterproof, as the ink doesn't run when wet, which is a nice bonus.

1. This is not exclusive to HP. If you buy a budget printing device, you are going to get a budget printing device.
2. The ink for all ink jet printing devices will dry up and clog up the works if do not print frequently.

I've owned other inkjets before and they were no where near as bad as this- at least if I used them once a month they seldom clogged. Also their software was not nearly as blatantly designed to tie the user into the manufacturer's consumables.

Although I do take your general point.

Clogged nozzles and wasted ink to purge the nozzles finally caused me to give up on inkjet printers. I stumbled across a little Samsung monochrome laser printer on clearance for $9 (it was a former display unit at an office supply store). The Ethernet interface and duplex printing capability were icing on the cake. I have no regrets dumping my inkjet printer in the electronics recycling bin.

I feel your pain, Beastie. This is the sort of reason that I've always stuck with lasers. Even a cheap mono laser is worth it over a colour inkjet in my opinion.

HP has always made some of the worst bloatware "drivers." This goes for what comes on their notebooks and PCs, as well. Only lenovo bests them, and that's because they ship blatant malware at times...

I know someone that just buys a cheap inkjet printer when the ink cartridges are empty. He says that he does this because he can find a cheaper printer over buying two new cartridges - how sad is that?

I don't use my printer much at home anymore (HP printer), but I haven't really had many issues with it. However, it's a pain in the ass to install the driver software from HP website or the disc that came with it - it has so much extra bloated software that I hate (reminder pop ups and all that trash). I've learned to let Win 7 install the driver and when it does, it's just the driver for the printer and nothing more.

My printer, about twice a month, prints off a calibration page that you need to scan - like I had just put in a brand new ink cartridge. This is irritating as hell. The printer is old (probably 6-7 years old). I should find something better than this HP pile of junk I keep. Main reason I bought it to begin with was it supported wireless connection and made printing simple for the wife and her Mac. She doesn't print anything from her Mac anymore.....yep, time to invest in something more recent.

I own a brother black and white, and a Samsung color, both laser. I'll never buy an ink jet again.

I use the black and white all the time to print shipping labels and paperwork that goes in return boxes.

I use NAPS for scan to PDF. (Not another PDF scanner)

Windows have a default scanner interface as well that works with default drivers. I use one. It's called Fax and scan.

Not possible at all if you want to use the printer/scanner over your network instead of USB.

Really? Weird. I have a Brother network all-in-one ink printer that's on wireless network. I didn't need to install drivers. Granted, I had to enter control panel and add hardware but didn't need Brother's own drivers.

Yeah thinking of picking up a Brother HL-22 ( seems not be listed on their site ) and you can still get the toner cartridges still today. Not looked much in to it but it seems like they kept compatibility over the years which is crazy good. I noticed as it says toner TN-420\450 sticker on it.

As i don't print much at all and only need it for labels and such liquid based it just silly.
