Whatever you get, make sure the VRM has some airflow provided, preferably direct one.

VRMs on MSI AM3+ boards are crappy in general. Low phase count on your particular board makes it even worse.

I wouldn't go beyond ~4.2GHz OC if you intend to put some real, long and heavy workload on that chip.

I want to OC but I do not want these temps. Man 65*C!!!

Dude telling me I have shit MB isn't helping me at all. I got this MB for LIKE free. SO I put a FX8300 8 core CPU on it. I figure (Much like my brand new Ryzen3 1300X it willbe able to hit that stock 4.2GHz even on this shit MB. So help me or please don't tell me my crap is crap.

LOL I have this one. CM 212 EVO I tried to install it and it goes on just upside down and backwards. lol this is why I need help finding one that fits good and will go on this MB I just bought one cost me 30 bucks and it don't fit and I aint going to take it back to the guy.

Oh and I do not plan to OC the hell out of it, I just want the 4.2GHz or close to that as I can get. after all it is what they rate it at stock. so...

Regardless of the quality of your motherboard, free or not, it's still really good advice to be mindful of the VRM temps on almost any AM3+ board where you plan to do even a little overclocking (to 4.2). Most 970 boards got *quite* toasty when heavily overclocking - I only felt safe going for 4.8 GHz+ on boards like the M5A99FX Pro R2.0 or equivalent, and even then the VRMs got a little warm for comfort. They're just trying to help, probably through some experience...

To answer your question, I'm a fan of the Cryorig H7. I have two of them in two different systems right now, can usually find them for under $30 on sale. Make sure to keep some airflow running across those VRMs...

What cooler came with the CPU? Was it the heatpipe cooler or the crappy non-heatpipe version? I forget what comes with the FX-8300.

The cooler that comes with the FX-8300 is the lower-watt one, the all-aluminum heatsink/no copper/no heatpipes. I think only the FX-6370 and FX-8320 and above came with the copper coolers...and only the FX-8370 and 6370 came with the wraith silent coolers (not the new AM4 ones). Could be wrong, it's been awhile...but I have an FX-8300 and it came with the same stock cooler as the lower-power FX CPUs.

What chassis does the cooler need to fit in? I was about to suggest some fairly decent C-Type coolers, but some of them may be too big depending on the case.

Ah, ok, I couldn't remember if it came with the low power one or the heatpipe cooler. I know the FX-8350 also comes with the Wraith cooler as well, as I have one. Sending the all non-heatpipe cooler with an 8-core CPU, even a "low power" one, is an insult IMO.

Since the FX-8300 came with the crap non-heatpipe cooler, I've got a standard heatpipe cooler you can have Trickson, I'll PM you details. It should be much better than the shit cooler they sent you. But since it is still a stock AMD cooler, it will fit for sure. It should also allow you to do 4.2GHz without a problem, and keep some airflow over those VRMs.

As you can see the HSF is a tiny little thing barely qualifies as a HSF!

I'd say something beefier than the 212 would be a good idea for the cpu, but the advice way up isn't wrong about the VRMs. I had hot VRMs with a 6300 until I stuck a fan directly on the heatsink. The harder you clock that chip the harder those VRMs are going to suffer ten fold over.

Yeah I have fans blowing the VRM lots of airflow all the time in every case I have. I know it is very important to keep air moving all over. Never had a MB blow from over heating. EVER!
I have killed MB's with screwdrivers and pliers.

I never used anything Cryorig so I can only go off of what other people say. I put two 212s on two 8350s just to see some good good temps. That's about it.

Bah was gonna say i got about 40 coolers here could have likely saved you some money. Or gotten you hooked up with a down draft style to cool the VRM / Mosfets as well as the CPU.

If you have a 212 then fine a way to make it work. It's really all you need for a small oc. It can be orented in any direction. Hell you can take the fan off and just run it fanless
