I can't tell you much about it, other than the picture quality is going to be better than all the Tn-Film suggestions being made.

I came from a CRT preference, and I haven't been happy with any Tn Film monitor I've ever seen, so I would just save a few more bucks, and buy a better monitor, tbh. I currently own both a VA and an IPS, and both look better than the cheap CRTs I came from, and LEAGUES better than ANY tn panel.

Or, look on Craigslist (or similar) and see if you can drum up an older professional CRT used for cheap or something. I really believe you will be dissatisfied with a tn panel.

Unfortunately E248WFP is 6-bit TN.

If that is the case, I'll have to pass on that model.

Heh, I see it now. The brightness is pretty lousey though at 270cd/m2 when most are 300-400. I'm really concerned about ghosting on it too.

You'll never use 300cd/m2, unless you are using it in direct sunlight. It's a complete non-issue indoors. The average indoors needed brightness is 120-170ish, depending on lighting conditions.

Most of these ratings and specs are overhyped, and padded by the manufacturers.

And as far as ghosting, that's the only thing I can't comment on. My 20" IPS doesn't ghost, but not all monitors are created equal, even with the same panel in them. It still seems too new to have a proper review yet to judge.

You could always be the guinea pig, and just send it back if it's crap. lol

I don't see IPS anywhere on it but the major benefit would be its 1920x1200 resolution versus 1920x1080.

That's a Tn film. The viewing angles give it away. That one has 160° viewing angles. Good panels have 178°. That's the first clue. If it's any less, it's TN-film.

There is one NEC that claims 178° from a tn-film, but that's a stretch of the truth on their part.

Apparently, there has been a recent reduction in the cost to manufacture IPS panels. The only thing that really concerns me about is the very high response time. So, get an IPS panel and risk having to get a refund because of ghosting or get a TN panel and miss a potential opportunity for a great monitor? Tough call.


I really wish someone else did a review on that NEC monitor so I don't have to play guinea pig. I really have a time constraint here because of the KVM (old KVM is VGA only and new is DVI + VGA so it will be a lot of work to swap cables and what not). If the KVM is defective, I'd rather send it back to Amazon than StarTech and I think I only have two weeks left to do that.

I never us the auto source that much. But the times i have used it, it works great. The only con have about my monitor is the speakers. But yet i've never seen a monitor with a set of good speakers. But I don't use them anyway

I won't use the integrated speakers. The KVM will route audio to headphones instead and for the high fidelity stuff, my computer has that Creative Audigy 2 ZS plugged into Klipsch ProMedia Ultra 5.1 speakers.


Well, I have some bad news. I got my mom's 19" LCD to try on the KVM (Samsung 906BW) and every time I use the KVM between a DVI and VGA computer, it doesn't auto-select the appriate signal. Every time, I have to press the Source button to make it switch. Because of this, I am not confident that the 24" Samsung monitors will auto-source properly...


So, where does that leave me? I think the NEC IPS monitor is a no-go. The latency is way too high and I game a lot so response time is more important than color clarity. So that leaves just the Asus...

I could be ordering a monitor as soon as later today or tomorrow.


Edit: The Auto button on Samsung monitors automatically resizes the screen to fit when using analog input. It's a useful feature but does not have anything to do with source. The Samsung monitors, therefore, have manual source selection via button.

both my samsung and erockes samsung both have auto sourcing. pull out the hdmi plug and it automatically searches for the next signal.

My Samsung SyncMaster 940BW that is now 3+ years old has auto-source selection. When the signal that you were using turns off, it starts scanning the DVI/VGA ports so it says Digital...Analog...Digital...Analog...Digital and then goes into Standby. I have this feature turned off because I only use the DVI input.

Ah! That monitor I tried is old school. I looked through it's options and it didn't mention anything about automatic source selection. Now it must be somewhat standard. That means the T240 is back as an option...
