I am so confused when it comes to my PC temperatures. Whenever I play games my mobo warning alarm starts going off because it it is set to go off if my CPU reaches 70 C. However this is where it gets confusing. I am running core temp and it says my CPU idles around 34. So after I start gaming and quickly shut off the game it says my CPU is around 58 (Not 70 as the warning alarm indicates). So when I check the temps in my bios it says that my CPU idles around 58 and my system temp is 34. Is it possible that my bios has the temps incorrect? What is says is the system temp is really the CPU temp? Which temp is supposed to be higher?

Thanks

You need a temp monitor to log temps to be able to see the actual temp under load. The time it took to shut down the game and look at the temp again, the proc could drop 20 degrees before you see it.

Core temp is continually running during gaming and tells me what the highest temp it hit is.

Basically the CPU temp that Core Temp reads is the same as the System temp that my bios reads. One of them is wrong

disable the stupid alarm in the bios

Is this a stock cooler and stock clocks? Also what temperature is the room you are in?

Is your motherboard bios updated?

I want to make sure that the bios is reading the temps wrong first. If it is not wrong my CPU could over heat. How do I know if my bios is up to date?

IT is a stock cooler and stock clocks. Could it be my GPU overheating?

Stupid question, did you use thermal paste when you installed the HS to the CPU?

Well the stock cooler already had a layer of thermal paste on it. Was a newbie move to to add more? The bigger question though is why is Core Temp (the program) and my bios mixing up the temps. Which one do you think is correct. Just to add. AMD overdrive agrees with core temp, that my CPU is idling around 34 while the bios says my CPU idles around 58.

CPU-Z will tell you your current bios version. If you haven't updated it, it's most likely not up to date and it may be your problem. CoreTemp is correct. Your bios is wrong and needs to be updated to better support your CPU.

My bios version is F6. is that current?

I updated my bios to F7 which is the latest one not counting a Beta version F8. But the temps in my bios are still reading the same

Your Bios version is old. But it's nothing to do with your problem. It's normal. You just need to cool your computer better. You can change your cpu fan. If you don't have a fan on back of your case, add a fan there.

so you added more thermal paste on top of the layer that was already on the cpu fan??
It probably wouldn't have caused the problems you're having (programs reporting different temps), but you shouldn't have done that. Especially if they are different brands of thermal paste.

It could give problem with temp if the layer was brand new and you added one. I dropped my idling temps of 4 degrees because i cleaned it after i had put too much thermal paste.

Well, one of them is wrong. To find out, we need to do some old school-like experimentation.

Step 1: Run coretemp to see core temperatures. Now run your favorite stress program (prime95 or Linpack or whatever). Run task manager and set the affinity of the process so that it gets "CPU0" only. Now start stressing. Now do the same and let it get "CPU1" only. As you have Phenom II x2 (form your system specs), it should have 2 cores, I think and believe.

Step 2: If coretemp shows Core # 0 = a°C and Core # 1 = b°C, then when you run the program on CPU0, it will indicate that a>b. And when you run the program on CPU1, it will tell you that b>a.

Result: If the above happens, then your BIOS is freaked out. If not, your BIOS is OK and coretemp needs some calibrations and your CPU needs a better cooler. :toast:

If you did add more TIM over the original just remember....
Applying thermal paste is not like painting a house....
My boss still does this and it pisses me off -_-

You want to know your CPU temps?
Download Coretemp, disable BIOS temp shutdown, and run Orthos.
Coretemp reads directly from the CPU die unlike the BIOS.

I'd say your Motherboard BIOS temps are off.
One of my Motherboards was terrible for reading correct values.
At one stage I had my CPU clocked to 2.6Ghz and the BIOS was reading it at 3.4Ghz....I wish...

If you know of a local PC store or PC repair places, see if they have any systems which you can test your CPU on.

I am going to point to crap BIOS.
